Jones helps Rovers snap lengthy winless streak, put distance on relegation zone.

(Thursday, May 5, 2011) -- As matches dwindle to just a few in many top European Leagues, it has become desperation time for those teams facing relegation. Nowhere is that more true than in English Premier League where there is a logjam at the bottom of the standings.
With three matches left in the season, three teams with United States-eligible players have relegation concerns. Blackburn Rovers, snapped a 10-match winless streak (0-6-4), registering their first victory since January to create some space on the drop zone. German-American midfielder Jermaine Jones played a pivotal defensive role and received a yellow card in a 1-0 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, jumping to 16th place with a 10-17-8 (38 points), three points clear of the relegation zone.
American midfielder Stuart Holden was not present for Bolton, recovering from knee surgery in the U.S.
West Ham United (7-17-11, 32) is at the bottom of the table in 20th place. U.S. defender Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes for West Ham in its 2-1 loss Sunday to Manchester City.
Sitting 19th and in the drop zone are Wolverhampton Wanderers. With American Marcus Hahnemann serving as the backup goalkeeper, Wolves drew 1-1 Sunday with Birmingham City and are 9-19-7 with 34 points, one point behind Wigan Athletic (7-14-14), which is at the top of the relegation zone.
United States keeper Tim Howard had a big afternoon on Saturday, keeping Everton in the match with seven saves in a 1-1 draw with Wigan.
American keeper Brad Friedel made a pair of saves for Aston Villa, which dropped a 2-1 decision to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley dressed, but did not play, while American keeper Brad Guzan did not dress for Villa.
U.S. attacker Clint Dempsey was rested and did not dress for Fulham, a 3-0 victor Saturday over Sunderland.
In the second-tier English League Championship, American defender Zak Whitbread went the distance and Norwich City secured second place and promotion with a 1-0 decision over Portsmouth Monday night.
In the third minute, Whitbread hit a three-yard header wide of the net, but Norwich prevailed on a tally by Simeon Jackson in the 50th minute.
American defender Eric Lichaj went the distance and was issued a yellow card for Leeds United in a 1-0 win Saturday over Burnley.
American striker Mike Grella did not dress for Leeds.
Nineteen-year-old forward Conor Doyle played the final 13 minutes for Derby County in its 2-0 loss to Bristol City on Saturday.
American striker Robbie Findley did not dress for Nottingham Forest which drilled Scunthorpe United 5-1 on Saturday.
U.S. forward Eddie Johnson did not dress for Preston North End in its 2-1 setback Saturday to Ipswich Town.
In the third-division League One, American defender Frank Simek went the distance for Carlisle United in a 3-0 loss Saturday to Dagenham & Redbridge.
American midfielder Anton Peterlin watched from the Plymouth Argyle bench a 1-0 loss Saturday to Exeter City and a 3-1 loss Monday to Southampton.
In Scotland's Premier League, U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu went the distance for Glasgow Rangers Saturday to drub Motherwell 5-0 and protect their one-point lead over arch-rival Glasgow Celtic, a 4-1 winner over Dundee United on Sunday.
In the German Bundesliga, U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo played well over 90 minutes for Hannover 96, which lost 1-0 Saturday to Borussia Moenchengladbach.
U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley did not dress for Hannover.
German-American midfielder\defender Daniel Williams played the final half hour for SC Freiburg in a 2-0 triumph Saturday over Hamburg SV.
U.S. midfielder Ricardo Clark played the closing 22 minutes for Eintracht Frankfurt in a 3-0 loss Saturday to 1. FSV Mainz 05.
American defender Timmy Chandler out with a foot injury did not dress for 1. FC Nürnberg in its 2-0 loss Saturday to Borussia Dortmund.
In the second-division 2. Bundesliga, it was a better week in the nets for David Yelldell who kept a clean sheet making four saves in MSV Duisburg's 4-0 win over FSV Frankfurt on Saturday.
American goalkeeper Luis Robles had an up-and-down Friday night for Karlsruhe in a 2-2 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf. Robles made two saves, but gave up a penalty kick and received a yellow card for taking a player down in his penalty area.
American striker Edson Buddle played the second half for FC Ingolstadt 04 in a 0-0 draw Saturday with FC Erzgebirge Aue.
American defender Amaechi Igwe, still out with a knee injury, was not available to Ingolstadt.
Eighteen-year-old Hawai'ian-born forward Bobby Wood did not dress for TSV 1860 Munich, a 2-1 winner Friday over Hertha Berlin. American midfielder Alfredo Morales did not dress for Hertha.
In France, U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra played 90 minutes for St. Etienne in a 1-1 draw with AS Monaco on Sunday.
In Belgium, U.S. midfielder Sacha Kljestan went the distance for RSC Anderlecht Sunday in a 0-0 draw with Club Brugge.
In the Netherlands, Oguchi Onyewu is out of favor. He dressed, but did not play for Twente Enschede in an easy 4-0 win over Willem II.
In Turkey, U.S. striker Jozy Altidore came off the bench and played the final 25 minutes for Bursaspor, which fell 1-0 Sunday to Kayserispor.
American midfielder Freddy Adu fared better, scoring a goal while playing the final half hour-plus for Caykur Rizespor in a 2-1 loss Saturday to Adanaspor.
In Denmark, U.S. forward Chris Rolfe played 69 minutes for Aalborg BK in its 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland on Saturday. American attacker Marcus Tracy is still out with a knee injury for Aalborg.
American defender Clarence Goodson played 90 minutes for Brondby IF in a 0-0 draw Sunday with Horsens.
American defender Michael Parkhurst did not dress for FC Nordsjaelland in a 1-0 loss to Lyngby on Sunday.
