Adu tally sparks Rizespor victory, hopes of promotion in Turkey.

(Thursday, May 12, 2011) -- United States midfielder Freddy Adu scored the decisive goal and added an assist for Caykur Rizespor in a 3-1 victory Sunday over visiting Tavsanli Linyitspor in Turkey's second-tier 1. Lig.

Adu, who has four goals in his last 10 games, drove home a header from outside of the penalty area, part of a 90-minute effort.

Rizespor is in prime position to join the four team promotion playoffs with one match remaining in the season. The top two teams are promoted automatically with the next four teams competing in a playoff for a third promotion berth in the Super Lig.

Rizespor (14-8-9) is tied for fourth with Orduspor (13-5-12) with 50 points, but is in fifth because its goal differential (plus-11) is six less than Orduspor. TKK Tavsanli Linyitspor is sixth at 13-7-11 with 50 points and Boluspor is seventh at 14-10-7 with 49 points.

On Sunday, Rizespor visits Samsunpor (16-5-10), tied for first with Mersin Idmanyurdu (17-8-7) at 58 points. With Idmanyurdu having completed its schedule, Samsunpor has virtually clinched the championship with a goal differential 16 better than Idmanyurdu.

In the Super Lig, U.S. striker Jozy Altidore and host Bursaspor forfeited its match (by an official 3-0 score) to Besiktas because of violence by its fans.

In the Netherlands, Oguchi Onyewu suffered a training injury on Friday and was not available to Twente Enschede in a 3-2 extra-time triumph over Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch Cup final on Sunday. With only two matches left, he may be done for the season.

Onyewu also likely will miss Sunday's climactic finale to the Eredivisie season with Twente hosting Ajax. Twente is in first place at 21-4-8 with 71 points, one point ahead of Ajax (21-5-7).

In the English Premier League, U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard made a pair of saves as part of an overall strong performance for Everton, which had a big day Saturday, defeating red-hot Manchester City 2-1.

German-American midfielder Jermaine Jones went the distance on the Blackburn Rovers' back-line in a 1-1 draw Saturday with last-place West Ham United.

U.S. defender Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes for West Ham and received a yellow card.

With two matches remaining, Rovers still have relegation concerns, in 15th place, three points and three positions above the drop zone at 8-13-15 with 39 points. West Ham is 7-17-12 with 33 points, four points shy of escaping the relegation zone.

American keeper Brad Friedel was only called on to make a single save for Aston Villa in a 1-1 draw Saturday with Wigan Athletic.

U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley dressed, but did not play, while reserve U.S. keeper Brad Guzan did not suit up for Villa.

U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey went 90 minutes for Fulham, which was steamrolled 5-2 Monday night by Liverpool. Liverpool opened the scoring in the first minute.

American keeper Marcus Hahnemann was again on the bench for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 3-1 decision Sunday over West Bromwich Albion.

With the triumph, Wolves climbed one point out of the relegation zone in 17th place at 10-19-7 with 37 points, barely ahead of Blackpool (9-18-9).

American midfielder Stuart Holden remains in the U.S., recovering from knee surgery, and was not present for Bolton Wanderers in a 2-1 loss Saturday to Sunderland.

In the second-division English League Championship, American defender Eric Lichaj went 90 minutes for Leeds United in a 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

American forward Mike Grella did not dress for Leeds.

American defender Zak Whitbread went the distance for Norwich City in a 2-2 draw Saturday with Coventry City.

American striker Conor Doyle played the final nine minutes for Derby County Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Reading.

U.S. forward Eddie Johnson, who was loaned to Preston North End, has returned to Fulham and the Premier League.

U.S. striker Robbie Findley, recovering from a thigh injury, was not available to Nottingham Forest, a 3-0 winner Saturday over Crystal Palace.

In the third tier League One, American defender Frank Simek played the first 34 minutes for Carlisle United in its 2-0 loss Saturday to Yeovil Town.

American midfielder Anton Peterlin played 90 minutes for Plymouth Argyle, which went down 4-1 Saturday to Leyton Orient.

In Scotland's Premier League, Glasgow Rangers held on to their narrow league lead with a 4-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian on Saturday. U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu played the first 72 minutes for Rangers and received a yellow card.

In the German Bundesliga, U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo played 84 minutes for Hannover 96, a 2-1 loser Saturday to VfB Stuttgart.

U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley did not dress for Hannover.

German-American defender Timmy Chandler played 90 minutes for 1. FC Nürnberg in a 2-1 loss to TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday.

American midfielder Daniel Williams played the final 22 minutes for SC Freiburg in its 2-0 loss Saturday to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

U.S> midfielder Ricardo Clark is still recovering from a calf injury and was unavailable to Eintracht Frankfurt, which went out Saturday and lost 2-0 to FC Cologne.

In the second-division 2. Bundesliga, American goalkeeper David Yelldell was sharp, making four saves for MSV Duisburg in a 3-1 triumph Sunday over SC Paderborn 07.

Another American keeper Luis Robles was on the bench for Karlsruhe in a 2-1 loss Sunday to Arminia Bielefeld.

American forward Edson Buddle played the second half and scored a wonderful goal for FC Ingolstadt 04 in a 1-1 draw Sunday with TSV 1860 Munich. Buddle took the ball just outside the right side of penalty area and cut back to the left. Surrounded by defenders, he hit a curving left-footed shot over the keeper's outstretched arm.

American defender Amaechi Igwe is out with a knee injury and unavailable to Ingolstadt. American striker Bobby Wood is also recovering from a knee injury and did not dress for 1860.

American midfielder Alfredo Morales dressed, but did not play for Hertha Berlin in a 2-0 win Sunday over FC Erzgebirge Aue.

In France, U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra played 90 minutes for St. Etienne in a 1-0 victory Saturday over Arles.

In Belgium, U.S. midfielder Sacha Kljestan played 90 minutes and received a yellow card for RSC Anderlecht, which fell 1-0 Friday to Racing Genk.

In Norway, Mikkel Diskerud went the distance for Stabaek IF in a 4-3 decision over Haugesund on Sunday.

American winger Josh Gatt and defender Sean Cunningham did not dress for Molde FK's 2-0 loss Sunday to Rosenborg.

In Denmark, U.S. defender Clarence Goodson went the distance and earned "Man of the Match" honors for Brondby IF in a 1-1 draw Sunday with FC Copenhagen.

American striker Chris Rolfe played the first half for Aalborg BK in a 2-1 triumph Friday over Lyngby minutes BK.

American forward Marcus Tracy did not dress for Aalborg.

American defender Michael Parkhurst dressed, but did not play for FC Nordsjaelland in a 2-0 loss Sunday to Esbjerg.
