(Wednesday, December 12, 2012) -- United States midfielder Clint Dempsey scored for visiting Tottenham Hotspur, but it did not hold up with Everton winning one of the English Premier League most exciting matches this season 2-1 behind two late goals and four saves by U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard Sunday at Goodison Park.

Dempsey was Spurs' best player. In the 76th minute, he received a ball with his back to goal, 30 yards out. He turned on a defender and let go a wicked shot which deflected just enough off Sylvain Distin to send it looping over Howard for a 1-0 lead.

Steven Pienaar tied the game for Everton in the 90th minute and Nikica Jelavic won it two minutes later.

American keeper Brad Friedel watched from the Tottenham bench with Hugo Lloris getting the start and being victimized in the closing minutes.

On Thursday, Friedel was in goal, making four saves in a 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos of Greece to advance to the knockout stages of Europe's second-tier Europa League.

In the English Premier League, U.S. keeper Brad Guzan kept a clean sheet without having to make a save for Aston Villa, which drew 0-0 with Stoke City.

American defender Eric Lichaj went 90 minutes for Villa, while U.S. defender Geoff Cameron went the distance for Stoke. Once again, U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu did not dress for Stoke.

In the second-division English League Championship, American defender Zak Whitbread played 90 minutes for Leicester City in its 2-2 draw with Barnsley.

U.S. defender Jonathan Spector played the first half for Birmingham City in a 1-0 loss to Wolverhamtpon Wanderers.

American defender Will Packwood dressed, but did not play for City.

American defender Tim Ream played the final five minutes for Bolton Wanderers in a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town.

Irish-American striker Conor Doyle dressed, but did not play for Derby County in its 3-1 victory over Leeds United.

American forward Robbie Findley did not dress for Nottingham Forest in its 2-0 shutout over Burnley.

In the third-tier League One, American forward Mike Grella played 82 minutes for Scunthorpe United in a 2-1 loss to AFC Bournemouth. He missed a penalty kick that would have leveled the score.

American midfielder Robbie Rogers played the final eight minutes for Stevenage in its 2-0 win over Hartlepool United.

American defender Frank Simek has a strained ligament in his knee and was unavailable to Carlisle United for its 3-1 loss to Sheffield United.

"It’s the one player we don’t have a ready-made replacement for," United manager Greg Abbott told the News & Star. "It’s really frustrating."
