Jones scores winner, adds assist to send Schalke past Twente to Europa quarterfinals.

(Tuesday, March 20, 2012) -- A number of Americans had very good weeks last week, none better than midfielder Jermaine Jones at Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga.

On Thursday, with Schalke facing elimination from the Europe's second-tier Europa League, Jones led his club German team on a furious rally with the decisive goal and a subsequent assist, completing a stretch of four unanswered goals in a 4-1 defeat of FC Twente of the Netherlands.

With a 4-2 aggregate victory, Schalke advanced to the quarterfinals in pursuit of what would be considered a major trophy.

Twente entered the match leading 1-0 on aggregate and then scored an early (away) goal in the 14th minute to take a commanding lead in the series

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice to pull Schalke even in the series, though behind because Twente owned the tiebreaker, its road goal. With Twente throwing everything in an all-out defense, Jones put Schalke ahead with a goal in the 71st minute. Ten minutes later, he assisted on Huntelaar's third strike of the night to put Schalke through..

Another American who had an exceptional week was Jozy Altidore, who went the distance for AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands in a 2-1 home loss, but a 3-2 aggregate victory over Udinese of Italy in the Europa League Round of 16..

AZ entered the second leg up by a pair of goals after winning 2-0 at home. On Thursday, however, Udinese pulled even on a pair of goals by Antonio di Natale, a third-minute penalty kick by and another in the 15th minute.

Despite being reduced to 10 men after Nick Viergever's second yellow card on the vents leading to the penalty kick, AZ prevailed on Erik Falkenburg's tally in the 31st minute.

Altidore was show a yellow card in the very physical match.

On Sunday, Altidore played 76 minutes in a 0-0 draw with NAC Breda in the Eredivisie.

Another Euro League winner was Steve Cherundolo of the Bundesliga's Hannover 96. Cherundolo went the distance and Hannover went through to the quarterfinals with an aggregate 6-2 preponderance after an easy 4-0 victory Thursday over Belgium's visiting Standard de Liège.

On Sunday, Cherundolo again went 90 minutes in a 4-1 romp over FC Cologne.

In a tragic FA Cup quarterfinal between English Premier League clubs, Tottenham Hotspur's encounter with Bolton Wanderers was abandoned after Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field with what was a major heart attack, leaving him in critical condition.

As of Tuesday, his condition had improved and the hospital cited "encouraging signs."

In a match abandoned after 41 minutes with each team having scored once, American goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who has not been playing Cup match was on the bench for Spurs.

U.S. defender Tim Ream dressed, but did not play for Bolton.

In Premier League action Saturday, U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey went 90 minutes for Fulham in its lopsided 3-0 loss to Swansea City.

Dempsey came closest to scoring for Fulham when he hit the crossbar in the late going.

In another FA Cup quarterfinal between EPL teams, U.S. keeper Tim Howard made only a single save for Everton's in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland, forcing a replay.

American Marcus Hahnemann was dressed as the backup keeper for Everton.

American defender Zak Whitbread went the distance and received a yellow card for Norwich City in a 1-0 loss to host Newcastle United in a Sunday EPL game..

In the second-tier English League Championship, no American played this weekend. Irish-American striker Conor Doyle has an ailing hamstring and did not dress for Derby County, Jonathan Spector had a bad thigh and was unavailable to Birmingham City, midfielder Robbie Rogers is dealing with post-concussion symptoms and is sidelined for Leeds United and 17-year-old central defender Daniel Potts is out with an injury for West Ham United.

In the third-division League One, American forward Mike Grella played 58 minutes Saturday for Bury in a 4-1 loss to Wycombe Wanderers.

American defender Frank Simek received a yellow card in a 90-minute effort Saturday for Carlisle United in its 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

American midfielder Anton Peterlin played the final 25 minutes for Walsall in its 2-1 loss to Yeovil Town.

In Scotland's Premier League, it was another ragged performance by bankrupt Rangers on Saturday, a 2-1 loss to Dundee United.

U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu went 90 minutes, while American midfielder Alejandro Bedoya, back from injury, started and went 83 minutes in his first outing since mid-December. U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra sat out with a yellow-cards suspension.

In the German Bundesliga, German-U.S. defender-midfielder Fabian Johnson went the distance Friday for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in a 2-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart.

Johnson helped his team by making a long run into the box and was awarded a penalty after he was taken down. It was converted for Hoffenheim's goal.

German-American defender-midfielder Danny Williams went the distance for Hoffenheim, while striker Joe Gyau was away with the U.S. under-23 men.

German-American Timmy Chandler went 65 minutes in the midfield for 1. FC Nürnberg in its 3-1 loss Saturday to VfL Wolfsburg.

Alfredo Morales had one of the most forgettable 45 minutes of any American in quite some time. The defender was responsible for two opposing penalty kicks while playing the second half for Hertha Berlin in its 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich. He also managed to pick up a yellow card.

German-American striker Andrew Wooten played the final 28 minutes for Kaiserslautern in its 4-1 loss to FC Schalke 04 on Sunday.

American David Yelldell was the backup keeper for Bayer Leverkusen in its 2-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday.

German-American forward Terrence Boyd did not dress for Borussia Dortmund in a 1-0 decision over Werder Bremen.

In the second-division 2. Bundesliga, American striker Matt Taylor was the only American to see action. He played the final 25 minutes for SC Paderborn 07 in a 4-0 loss Saturday to FC Ingolstadt 04.

American forward Bobby Wood dressed, but did not play for TSV 1860 Munich in its 4-1 loss to SpVgg Greuther Furth. American keeper Luis Robles did not dress for Karlsruher.

In Italy, U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley had a solid 90-minute performance for Chievo Verona in a 2-2 draw with Bologna.

In France, American striker Charlie Davies did not dress for Sochaux, a 2-0 winner over Nice on Sunday.

In Belgium, U.S. midfielder Sacha Kljestan played 80 minutes for RSC Anderlecht in a 2-2 draw with St. Truiden.

U.S. midfielder Mix Diskerud is with the U.S. under-23s and was not available for Gent's 3-1 victory over KV Kortrijk.

In Denmark, U.S. defender Clarence Goodson went the distance Sunday and headed home his second goal of the season for Brøndby IF in its 2-1 triumph over FC Nordsjælland.

American defender Michael Parkhurst went 90 minutes for Nordsjælland.

American midfielder Conor O'Brien played the final eight minutes for SønderjyskE in its 4-2 loss to Silkeborg IF.

American forward Chris Rolfe came on in the 71st minute last night for Aalborg BK, which played a 1-1 draw with HB Køge.

American defender Brad Rusin did not dress for Køge.

In Mexico, American midfielder DaMarcus Beasley went the distance for Puebla in a 1-0 setback to San Luis on Sunday.

American defender-midfielder Michael Orozco Fiscal went 90 minutes and received a yellow card for San Luis.

U.S. midfielder José Torres went 64 minutes Saturday for Pachuca, a 3-2 winner over Atlante.

American midfielder Sonny Guadarrama did not dress for Atlante.

American defender Edgar Castillo went the distance for Club Tijuana in its 1-0 loss to Tigres.

U.S. defender Jonathan Bornstein did not dress for Tigres

Mexican-Salvadoran-American winger Joe Corona was with the U.S. under-23s and not available to Tijuana,

American forward Herculez Gomez has a sore hip and was sidelined for Santos Laguna.

Mexican-American striker Adrian Ruelas did not dress for Jaguares de Chiapas.
