Despite scoring prowess, Altidore runs into stretch of bad luck.

(Thursday, October 11, 2012) -- Things had been going pretty well for United States striker Jozy Altidore, leading AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands with eight goals in the young 2012-13 season. The past few days weren't too pleasant.

In AZ's 3-0 defeat Sunday by Twente Enschede in the Dutch Eredivisis, he received a red card with being booked for a second time, this time for dissent in the 52nd minute. The next day he was left off the U.S. roster for the critical final two matches of CONCACAF Semifinal Round Qualifying.

"I communicated to Jozy I was not happy about his latest performances with us, maybe even over the last 14 months," U.S. coach Jürgen Klinnsmann said in a conference call. "I think Jozy can do much, much better. The reason he's not coming in is mainly because of his performances in Jamaica and at home, also in training and also certain things that went on through the May-June camp. We decided to bring in Eddie Johnson and Alan Gordon and give them a chance to show how much they have improved. They're both doing very well in (Major League Soccer) right now."

Terrence Boyd (who was also left off the U.S. roster), Michael Bradley and Herculez Gomez all scored big goals in their club matches.

Boyd, a striker scored his seventh goal of the season -- five in league play - when he netted a late equalizer for Rapid Wien's 1-1 draw with FC Magna Neustadt in Austria.

In a 64-minute appearance, Gomez slipped behind the defense to recordeSantos Laguna's goal in a 1-1 draw with Queretaro in Mexico.

Bradley, in his first match back from injury, was on the spot to collect a rebound and score for Roma in a 2-0 triumph over Atalanta in Italy. In England's Premier League, American Brad Guzan was in goal and made four saves in a losing cause Sunday for Aston Villa in a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

American defender Eric Lichaj was dressed, but remained on the bench for Villa. U.S. forward Clint Dempsey played 82 minutes for Tottenham, while American keeper Brad Friedel was on the Spurs bench, ending a record streak of 310 consecutive Premier League starts.

U.S. defender Geoff Cameron went the distance for Stoke City in a 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

U.S. midfielder Maurice Edu made his debut for Stoke, playing the final 10 minutes.

U.S. keeper Tim Howard made just one save for Everton in a 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic.

In the second-division English League Championship, American defender Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes for Birmingham City in a 1-0 loss to Huddersfield Town.

American midfielder-defender Will Packwood did not dress for Birmingham.

American defender Zak Whitbread played the final 25 minutes for Leicester City in a 2-0 win over Bristol City.

American defender Tim Ream dressed, but did not play for Bolton Wanderers in a 2-1 loss to Millwall.

U.S. midfielder Stuart Holden remains sidelined for Bolton with a bad knee.

Irish-American striker Conor Doyle did not dress for Derby County in its 0-0 draw with Brighton & Albion.

In the third-tier League One, American forward Mike Grella played 90 minutes for Scunthorpe United in a 1-0 loss to Stevenage.

American midfielder Robbie Rogers dressed, but did not play for Stevenage.

American defender Frank Simek dressed, but did not play for Carlisle United in a 2-1 decision over Walsall.

In Germany's Bundesliga, German-American defender Fabian Johnson and midfielder Danny Williams went 90 minutes for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, a 2-0 loser to league-leading Bayern Munich.

Williams was issued a yellow card.

U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo played 81 minutes and received a yellow card for Hannover 96 in its 1-1 draw Sunday with Borussia Dortmund.

German-American defender Timmy Chandler played 90 minutes for 1. FC Nürnberg in a 3-0 loss to SC Freiburg. He committed a foul in his penalty area that earned a yellow card and resulted in a successful penalty kick.

German-American midfielder Jermaine Jones sat out FC Schalke 04's 3-0 whitewash of VfL Wolfsburg with a sore ankle.

American keeper David Yelldell did not dress for Bayer Leverkusen in a 2-2 draw with VfB Stuttgart.

In the second-division 2. Bundesliga, American defender John Anthony Brooks played 90 minutes for Hertha Berlin in a 3-0 victory over 1860 Munich.

German-American defender-midfielder Alfredo Morales dressed, but did not play for Hertha.

German-American forward Andrew Wooten played 90 minutes for SV Sandhausen in its 1-0 win over Aalen.

American midfielder Joe Gyau did not dress for St. Pauli in a 2-2 draw with FC Union Berlin.

In Spain's La Liga, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu again dressed, but did not play for Malaga in a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

In the second-tier Segunda Division, U.S. defender Carlos Bocanega went the distance for Racing Santander in a 1-0 loss to Murcia.

In Norway, American Steve Clark was in net for Hønefoss BK in its 3-2 loss to Brann.

American wing Josh Gatt played the first half for Molde FK in its 3-2 decision over Sandnes Ulf

Chad Barrett dressed, but remained on the bench for Vålerenga in its 1-1 draw with Strømsgodset IF..

American midfielder Mikkel Diskerud had an thigh injury and was unavailable to Rosenborg BK for its 1-0 triumph over Odd Grenland.

A hip injury appears to have ended American defender Sean Cunningham season at Stabaek IF.

In Denmark, American defender Michael Parkhurst played 80 minutes for FC Nordsjælland in a 3-0 loss to Odense BK.

American midfielder Conor O'Brien played 90 minutes for SønderjyskE in its 3-0 setback to AGF Aarhus.

American striker Charlie Davies dressed, but did not play in Randers' 2-1 victory over FC Midtjylland.

American defender Clarence Goodson did not dress for Brøndby IF in its 3-1 loss to Aalborg BK.

In Sweden, American midfielder Alejandro Bedoya was injured and forced to leave Helsingborg's 2-2 draw with FC Twente in a Europa League match last Thursday. He did not dress Sunday for a 2-0 victory over Mjallby.

In Mexico, U.S. defender Edgar Castillo was "Man of the Match" for Club Tijuana, which defeated Toluca 1-0.

American midfielder Joe Corona entered in the 62nd minute, while defender Greg Garza did not dress for Club Tijuana.

American defender Michael Orozco Fiscal went the distance for San Luis in a 4-0 loss to Jaguares.

U.S. midfielder José Torres dressed, but did not play for Pachuca in its 1-1 draw with Leon

American defender Jonathan Bornstein dressed, but did not play for Tigres in a 2-1 loss to Puebla.
