Altidore ignites late rally, Sunderland overcomes Dons in Capital One Cup.

(Tuesday, August 27, 2013) -- United State striker Jozy Altidore scored his first goal for Sunderland and at the same time helped save his new club some embarrassment.

Altidore’s goal in the 78th minute triggered a run of four goals that allowed the host Black Cats of the Premier League to erase a two-goal deficit and record a 4-2 decision tonight over Milton Keynes Dons of the third-tier League One in the Capital One Cup second-round match before 18,992 at Stadium of Light.

Attacker Conor Wickham scored the equalizer in the 87th minute. Two minutes later, Wickham put Sunderland ahead 3-2 after a quickly-taken free kick by Altidore.

Midfielder Adam Johnson finalized the scoring with a strike five minutes into stoppage time.

Altidore played 90 minutes for the third straight match, including Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton.

In the second-division English League Championship,

U.S. defender Tim Ream, who has not seen much playing time for Bolton Wanderers, started in the midfield Saturday and played 72 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers.

After impressing manager Dougie Freedman, Ream was forced to the sideline with a slight hamstring pull.

“Because of the injuries, I’ll be forced into changes,” Freedman told The Bolton News. “That was Tim’s first league game and, for me, he was ‘Man of the Match,’ but I had to bring him off because he was feeling a bit of tightness in his hamstrings. I can’t really risk Tim again.

Ream thus missed tonight’s Capital One Cup 1-1 draw with homestanding Tranmere Rovers of League One advancing after prevailing in tiebreaking penalty kicks 4-2.

Back in the Premier League, U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard was strong, making two saves en route to a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

U.S. keeper Brad Guzan also was solid for Aston Villa, but his team fell 1-0 to Liverpool.

U.S. defender Geoff Cameron went 90 minutes for Stoke City in a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Midfielder Maurice Edu remains out following sports hernia surgery, while his U.S. teammate, midfielder Brek Shea (knee) joined him on the Stoke sideline with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his left knee.

In the League Championship, American defender Eric Lichaj was shown a yellow card in a 90-minute effort for Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw with Watford.

U.S. defender Jonathan Spector went the distance tonight, earning a yellow card in the 66th minute, for visiting Birmingham City, which advanced in the Capital One Cup 3-2 in penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw with League Championship foe Yeovil Town.

In league play, Spector went 90 minutes Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Leicester City.

American defender Zak Whitbread played 90 minutes for Leicester.

German-American midfielder Danny Williams went the distance and received a caution for Reading tonight in a humiliating 6-0 rout at the hands of Peterborough United, which is tied for the lead of League One at 4-0-0 with 12 points. Reading is 1-1-2 with five points, in a three-way tie for 12th in the League Championship.

On Saturday, Williams played the final eight minutes in Reading’s 1-0 loss to Blackpool.

In the German Bundesliga, German-American defender John Anthony Brooks played only the first 23 minutes for Hertha BSC Berlin in its 1-0 triumph over Hamburg SV. He was replaced by manager Jos Luhukay for tactical reasons.

German-American defender Fabian Johnson played 90 minutes for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in its 3-3 draw with SC Freiburg.

American midfielder Joe Gyau did not dress for Hoffenheim.

German-American defender Timmy Chandler played 90 minutes for 1. FC Nürnberg in a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

German-American midfielder Jermaine Jones played 90 minutes for FC Schalke 04 in a 2-1 loss to Hannover 96.

U.S. defenderSteve Cherundolo sidelined by three arthroscopic surgeries on his left knee received good news and is expected back relatively soon. It was originally feared he would be out for a significant period of time.

U.S. defender Michael Parkhurst did not dress for FC Augsburg in a 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart.

In the second-division 2. Bundesliga, German-American midfielder Alfredo Morales played the opening 76 minutes for FC Ingolstadt 04 in edging Arminia Bielefeld 3-2.

American striker Bobby Wood played the opening 58 minutes for TSV 1860 München in its 1-0 loss to SC Paderborn 07.

American forward Andrew Wooten dressed, but did not play for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in a 4-0 loss to VfR Aalen.

In the third-tier Regionalliga, American David Yelldell had a strong match in goal for Bayer Leverkusen II in a 3-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach II.
