The European Champions League is the pinnacle of club football. It is most clubs dream to win Europe’s elite competition. On Saturday night, Real Madrid and Liverpool will have the opportunity to fulfil that dream in Kiev.
Madrid have a bit of recent Champions League history
In truth, it’s a familiar scenario for the Madridista’s, who will be appearing in their fourth European final in five seasons. The prospect of a third straight Champions league triumph must be driving Zinedine Zidane’s team on to victory.
The Champions League seems to hold something special for the boys from the Spanish capital, as Los Blancos have struggled to recreate the same sort of magic in La Liga. The European champions have in fact suffered just four defeats in their last 39 outings in Europe’s elite competition.
The Spanish giants have won the competition on a record 12 occasions, winning all six Champions League finals, which they have appeared. However, Los Blancos did suffer three final defeats in the European Cup era, one of which was a 1-0 final defeat against Liverpool, the only time these two teams have met in a European final.
Liverpool attack highly dangerous
Liverpool are slight underdogs to win this clash. However, the Reds front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane give Jurgen Klopp’s side a big chance of winning the trophy for the first time since 2005.
Salah has 13 goals, Mane nine and Firmino 11 in Europe this season, the trio has been unstoppable at home and abroad this season. Their pace, skill and guile is enough to scare any defence in the world game. Their goals have been enough to negate the fact that Klopp’s side are not the best team in the world at defending, something Klopp needs to rectify if he wants to win the Premier League next season.
Should be highly entertaining
Both of these teams are at their best when going forward and both are poor at the back, as the previous rounds of this competition have illustrated perfectly. This game is so eagerly anticipated, as it could truly go either way.
The game could be any score too such is the attacking talent on display from both sides. It may be characterised as Mohamed Salah v Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, but there is much more attacking talent on either side than just their talismen.
Mane and Firmino’s parts in that Liverpool trio is often underplayed, as Salah takes the headlines and the glory. Meanwhile, in the Spanish capital, the much-maligned Karim Benzema and the beautifully talented Isco are the perfect foil for goal scoring machine Ronaldo.
Many Champions League finals are tight. This looks unlikely to be one of those. This encounter looks set to be two teams going toe-to-toe. Both teams only know one way of playing and that is to attack.
Neither team would admit to fearing an opposition team either. This could be a classic Champions League final. It is hard to predict the outcome. However, it would take a brave man to bet on a low-scoring game that it is for sure!
Who will win the Champions League final?
