Day one of gameweek six in the Premier League saw victories for Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham. Here is a more detailed look at what happened in Saturday’s top-flight games:
City hit Cardiff for five
Manchester City hammered league new boys Cardiff 5-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium, as Pep Guardiola’s side produced another display of scintillating attacking football.
It took the Citizens 32 minutes to break the Bluebirds resistance. The impressive Bernardo Silva found Sergio Aguero and the diminutive striker made no mistake to score his 205th City goal on his landmark 300th appearance for the club.
Silva doubled the visitors lead three minutes later, as the Portuguese’s looping header from Leroy Sane’s cross beat Neil Etheridge is a slightly fortunate manner. City made it three just before the break. Ilkay Gundogan played a lovely one-two with Raheem Sterling before curling a powerful effort past the Cardiff goalkeeper.
The visitor’s maintained control in the second period and substitute Riyad Mahrez tapped home the Citizens fourth on 67 minutes from Gundogan cross. The Algerian international doubled his goal tally when intercepting a loose pass from Bruno Ecuele Manga then firing low into the far corner.
The victory moves Guardiola’s team up to second place in the table, temporarily at least with Chelsea playing later today. The Citizens remain favourites to win the Premier League title this season.
Salah on the scoresheet as Reds continue winning start
Liverpool recorded a comfortable 3-0 home win over Southampton to maintain their hundred per cent start to the Premier League campaign.
The home side started the game on the front foot and took just ten minutes to take the lead. Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri combined before the latter hit a shot that deflected off Shane Long and Wesley Hoedt to beat Alex McCarthy.
The Merseysiders doubled their lead on 21 minutes, as Joel Matip headed home powerful at the far post from a corner kick after Cedric had produced a superb last-gasp tackle to deny Mohamed Salah.
The scoring was complete in first-half stoppage-time, as a long-range Shaqiri free-kick smashed against the bar and Salah prodded home from the rebound.
The win moved Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table. However, Chelsea could move back above them with a win over West Ham later today.
Spurs bounce back to winning ways on the south coast
Tottenham ended a three-game run in all competitions by recording a 2-1 win over Brighton at the AMEX Stadium in Saturday’s late-kick.
Spurs dominated the first half possession. However, it took the visitors until the 42nd minute to make their dominance pay. Brighton striker Glenn Murray handled Kieran Trippier’s free-kick in the penalty area and Harry Kane made no mistake from with the spot-kick.
The north London side did not seal the victory until the 76th minute. A superb team move involving Lucas Moura, Danny Rose and Erik Lamela led to latter firing home from 12 yards out. Brighton scored a consolation goal deep into stoppage-time through a sublime effort from Anthony Knockaert, who also saw an effort from 20 yards out saved by Spurs’ stand-in goalkeeper Pablo Gazzaniga.
Spurs held on though to move up to fifth place in the Premier League table. Brighton are 13th in the top-flight table and looking set for a long hard season.
