Matchday two of gameweek two of the Champions League produced some fantastic entertainment and an individual display of brilliance from one player that will be hard to beat. Here we take a detailed look at what happened in Wednesday’s games:

Messi mesmerising in win over Tottenham

Barcelona recorded a 4-2 win at Wembley against Tottenham with Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi at the heart of the victory.

The Catalan giants took less than two minutes to establish a lead. Messi produced a fantastic ball over the top of the Spurs defence to full-back Jordi Alba, only for Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to rush out of his goal and Alba to square the ball to Philippe Coutinho 18 yards out and the Brazilian fired into an empty net.

The visitors doubled their lead on 28 minutes, as once again they cut through the Tottenham defence like a knife through butter. Messi curled a ball over the top of the home defence to Coutinho.

The Brazilian international somehow kept the ball in play by flicking the ball back to Ivan Rakitic 20 yards out and the Croatian produced a stunning half-volley that flew in off the woodwork.

Messi was unfortunate not to score early in the second period, as the forward hit the base of the same post twice. The home side looked to be back in the game on 52 minutes, though, as Harry Kane showed good feet in the box to curl home a clinical effort.

However, the Catalan giants doubled their lead again just four minutes later. Alba got down the flank once again and crossed towards Luis Suarez, who produced a clever dummy and Messi fired into the bottom corner of the net.

The home side would not lie down though and scored a second on 66 minutes. Kane’s good work led to the ball reaching Erik Lamela, whose shot took a heavy deflection off Clement Lenglet to give Marc-Andre ter Stegen no chance.

Tottenham pushed for an equaliser with Lucas Moura and Kane both denied by some good last-ditch tackles. However, Messi sealed the victory in the last minute of normal time, scoring from close-range after good work from Suarez.

The victory means that Barcelona remain top of the group having picked up maximum points so far in the group. The Catalan giants remain one of the hot favourites to win the competition this season. Meanwhile, Spurs are third-place in Group B following defeats in both their group games this season.

Reds suffer late defeat in Naples

Liverpool have impressed this season in the Premier League. However, on Wednesday night Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered a 1-0 defeat at Napoli.

Napoli were the better side and lively substitute Dries Mertens saw an effort cannon back off the bar in the second period. However, the winning goal did arrive until the 90th minute.

Spanish winger Jose Callejon found space down the Napoli right in the absence of Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson, who was upfield. The former Real Madrid star’s cross then evaded Alisson and Lorenzo Insigne poked home.

The result means that Napoli climb to the top of the table, with Liverpool dropping to second place, ahead of third-place PSG by virtue of a superior head-to-head record.
