On Wednesday night, the last games of gameweek 35 in the Premier League took place. There was plenty at stake at Old Trafford and Molineux. Here is what happened in the two encounters:
Citizens keep their nerve at Old Trafford
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City recorded a 2-0 win at rivals Manchester United to move back to the top of the Premier League table.
Unsurprisingly, the opening period of the game was a tight and tense affair. The first real sight of goal came City goalkeeper Ederson reacted quickly to rush out at the feet of United striker Marcus Rashford.
The best chance of the first period fell to England winger Raheem Sterling, who saw a low effort from around eight yards out superbly kept out by United goalkeeper David De Gea. The visitors looked to be getting into their stride towards the break and came out the brighter of the two teams in the second period.
Pep Guardiola’s team took the lead on 54 minutes. Bernardo Silva worked himself some space on the right side of the area, used Luke Shaw as a shield to block De Gea’s view, and fired home a low shot from 15 yards out past the United ‘keeper at his near post.
City came close to equalising soon afterwards. However, Sergio Aguero’s curling effort from the edge of the box hit the outside of De Gea’s post. United should have equalised, though, as Jesse Lingard failed to make proper contact on the ball from close-range with the goal gaping.
City doubled their lead on 66 minutes. Substitute Leroy Sane hit a low effort from 15 yards out that De Gea failed to keep out with his feet. City midfielder David Silva could have seen red for leaving a foot in on the chest of Andreas Pereira. However, referee Andre Marriner failed to spot the incident.
In the end, City ran out comfortable winners. The victory moved the Citizens a point above title rivals, Liverpool. Guardiola’s side are now big favourites to retain their top-flight crown. Meanwhile, United are three points outside the top-four spots and looking like outsiders to seal a Champions League spots.
Wolves dent Arsenal’s top-four hopes
The home side took the lead on 28 minutes, Ruben Neves fired home a free-kick from 20 yards out after a foul by Nacho Monreal on Jonny. The home side doubled their lead on 37 minutes. Matt Doherty headed home from a Jonny cross after Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno came out of his goal.
Wolves all-bit sealed victory in first-half stoppage-time, as Diogo Jota’s effort went right through Leno into the visitor’s net. Greek centre-back Sokratis scored a consolation goal from a Granit Xhaka cross with ten minutes remaining on the clock. However, it is was too little too late for the team from north London.
The win moved Wolves up to seventh place in the Premier League table, a position that could them the home side a Europa League spot for next season. Meanwhile, Arsenal are fifth-place, a point behind fourth Chelsea.
