The Premier League title race is set to come down to the wire, as many expected that it would. Manchester City and Liverpool have easily been the best teams in the top flight throughout the course of the season so far, but it’s not over yet. Both teams have got to take on sides this weekend that you’d think would have nothing to play for, but would love nothing more than to throw a spanner in the works.
This is it
Manchester City will be going one on one with Brighton & Hove Albion, who have already had their survival in the Premier League confirmed for another season. This came as a result of Cardiff’s recent loss to Crystal Palace, but to be honest, the Seagulls haven’t really been giving their fans all too much to shout about lately. They’ve been able to grind out some important wins which have kept their heads above water, but in reality, they’ll need to strengthen a lot over the course of the summer in order to do well next season.
Liverpool, on the other hand, take on a team that thrive when going up against the big boys: Wolverhampton Wanderers. They’ve already beaten the Reds once this season in the FA Cup, and you’d best believe that they’ll be eager to have their say in the title race. There are almost certainly going to be a few intriguing twists and turns, but in the end, Brighton are the ones who need to put in a world class performance in order to ensure that Liverpool even have a shot.
Of course, both sides have other things on their mind as well as the title race. Manchester City will be going one on one with Watford next weekend in the FA Cup final, and if they can win that game as well as the one against Brighton, they would’ve achieved the domestic treble. Whilst their inability to reach the Champions League final would’ve hurt, a treble would more than help to ease the pain.
Destiny awaits?
Liverpool, as we’ve already alluded to, will be taking on Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League final at the start of next month. It’s quite the accomplishment for a team that, just twelve months ago, were left feeling shattered after they were defeated by Real Madrid in the very same fixture. Klopp will undoubtedly have one eye on that game already, but we can’t imagine it’s going to cause him to alter his team selection.
The bookmakers still have Manchester City as the firm favourites to win the title, but if Liverpool are good at one thing, it’s proving people wrong. They managed to do it against Barcelona in their semi final recently, and there’s absolutely no reason to believe they can’t do something similar once again.
Whatever happens we just think that we, as fans, are lucky to be able to see two teams like this battling it out for English football’s top prize. This is the best league in the world right now, and it’s hard to argue against that.
