It’s been a long road to get to the end of the current season, but now that we’re finally here, fans are starting to get a bit bummed out that domestic football is going to be disappearing from our lives over the course of the next few months. Of course, we’ve still got a few big games left to go before we close the book completely on the 2018/19 season, with one of them being the FA Cup final which is set to take place tomorrow at Wembley Stadium.
Manchester City will be going head to head with Watford, in a game that could cement their place in the history books. City have already captured the Premier League title and won the League Cup, meaning that they’re just one step away from completing the domestic treble. It’s an accomplishment that many clubs could only dream of, but this Pep Guardiola side isn’t just any other club.
A stark contrast
It kind of goes beyond words when you examine the quality of this squad from top to bottom, and it really does make you wonder just how much further (and how much better) they could go/get. Of course the biggest issue for them is going to be taking Watford too lightly, which is something that could easily happen when you remember or realise just how good the Hornets have been this season.
You only need to take one look at their semi-final performance against Wolves to figure that out, because their ability to come from behind like they did is pretty remarkable. They looked dead and buried in more ways than one, before Deulofeu and Deeney dragged them kicking and screaming all the way to the final.
End to end?
This is going to be a really fascinating game to watch, because if City aren’t careful, they could easily get bullied by this Watford team. It’s one of the primary tactics they’ve used in order to get under the skin of their opponents throughout the course of the season, and it’s worked. City have also been focusing on trying to retain the Premier League title in recent weeks, whereas Watford have had one goal and one goal only: win the FA Cup.
It’s a fascinating dynamic between two clubs who, let’s be honest, are going to view this final in very different ways. If City win then it’s another trophy to add to their growing collection, and it completes a historic domestic treble. If Watford get the job done then it’ll go down as probably the most famous day in the history of the club, and they’ll also have qualified for Europe. Oh, and did we mention that it’ll be Wolves, who they beat in the semis, that miss out on the Europa League if they win?
The bookmakers have City down as the clear favourites but there’s much more to this story than that. This is going to be an absolute war, and we’re really excited to see how it all unfolds in one of club football’s most historic games.
