Alexis Sanchez seems to have rediscovered his mojo away on international duty with Chile at the Copa America. The Manchester United forward has now scored in both his nation’s group games, helping the holders to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
A torrid time at Manchester United
The goals for his country will have come as a massive relief, as the forward had failed to score a goal in five months. For a player who was previously considered a very good player, that is an extraordinary stat.
For much of his stay at Arsenal, the forward looked like the Duracell Bunny. However, at United, he looks like somebody had taken his batteries out. The 30-year-old signed a massive contract reportedly worth £500,000 when he joined from Arsenal in January 2018.
He joined in exchange for Armenian playmaker Henrik Mkhitaryan. At the time, the deal made sense for all parties involved. However, both players have struggled at their new clubs.
Giving Sanchez such a huge contract now seems to have been a huge mistake by the Red Devils. As a player, the Chilean looked sluggish towards the end of his career with the Gunners, which was not like him, as he was so electric at his peak in north London.
The former Barcelona man has made just 28 appearances for the Red Devils since his switch to Manchester, scoring a meagre three goals. His whole career seems to have collapsed since moving to the north west.
United want rid of Sanchez this summer
According to reports from the Daily Express, Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward is willing to sanction the exit of the Chilean this summer, with the Red Devils still paying some of his salary.
Even if United decided to cut their losses and allowed Sanchez to leave as a free agent, the forward may be reluctant to leave.
However, reportedly even with United still paying some of the forward’s salary, there are no takers to sign the forward this summer. It leaves United in a major quandary, as boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempts to rebuild a flagging squad.
It would be majorly surprising if Sanchez was part of the Norwegian’s plans for next season. There have been media reports that suggest the forward does not get along well with his United teammates, which just adds to the need for him to move on.
The reports are nothing new. Even during his Arsenal days, there were regular reports that the Chilean did not mix well with his teammates. His behaviour on the pitch illustrated that he was very much an individual.
A return to Italy or Spain likely
If Sanchez does moves on this summer, then it will likely be to either Spain or Italy according to the bookmakers. However, considering his massive contract a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League cannot be ruled out for the forward.
The MLS would seem like a potential destination. However, the US top-flight franchises are no longer paying the major wages that they previously did to big foreign stars.
Alexis Sanchez’s situation is quite a sad one. He has gone from one of the best players in the Premier League to a Manchester United outcast. However, some would say that he has played a big part in his demise because of his reportedly poor attitude.
Where Sanchez will be plying his trade is difficult to say. If he stays at United, though, it looks highly unlikely he will see much pitch time, which could keep his football career in its current stasis-like state.
