One of the biggest transfer stories of the summer could be Brazilian star Neymar returning to former club Barcelona from PSG. There has been much speculation over the 27-year-old’s future in the French capital, with a return to the Catalan giants mooted.
Neymar wants to return to Barcelona
Now, according to Barcelona’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner, the forward wants a switch back to Catalonia. Here is an extract from what Cardoner told El Mundo: “The correct thing is to say that Neymar wants to return to Barcelona, but I do not agree that Barcelona worry about signing Neymar.
He continued by saying: “I understand that any player has the goal of coming to Barcelona, where the best players in history have been. All players can be willing to come and want to play, but we have to have a balanced budget.”
That statement did not say anything we already knew. Neymar enjoyed his time at Barcelona. However, he left to get out of the shadow of Lionel Messi and
Would Neymar be the right signing?
It is crazy to say, but there are doubts about whether Barcelona should re-sign the Brazilian forward this summer. The Brazilian tends to bring a whole heap of drama with his tremendous football ability. He has been involved in a number of controversial incidents, on and off the pitch since his move to the French capital. Barcelona are a club who like to maintain a good reputation, which likely why there are question marks over a move to re-sign the Brazilian.
The Catalan giants are also widely expected to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann at the beginning of next month. Signing Griezmann and Neymar would be overkill, even for a club of Barcelona’s stature. The Blaugrana also have highly-rated young French attacker Ousmane Dembele in their ranks. The former Dortmund youngster enjoyed a decent campaign last season. However, question marks over his temperament have seen his future with the Catalan giants thrown into question.
The likes of Bayern Munich and European champions Liverpool have been linked with making moves for the French international this summer. However, the club’s hierarchy claims that the forward is not for sale.
Barcelona looking for Champions League triumph
The reigning La Liga champions have now won their domestic league in back-to-back seasons. They are once again favourites to win La Liga this season. However, it is winning the Champions League that they really crave. Ernesto Valverde’s team have made it to the latter stages of the competition for the last two seasons, only to throw away big first leg leads against Roma and last season Liverpool.
On the field, signing Neymar may well help the Catalan giants win the Champions League. The 27-year-old played a key role in their last triumph back in 2015. However, Neymar seems to like the attention of the media and lives a lavish lifestyle. There is almost a circus surrounding him at times. He is, without doubt, a very good football. However, the other facets of the forward are a lot less positive, which is reportedly why the Parisians are willing to sell the forward.
This story could go either way. Like everything involving Neymar, there is likely to be drama involved and that is not great for any of the parties involved.
