Football fans can be fickle even at the best of times, mainly because that’s just their nature. Regardless of if things are going really well, they’ll find a reason or ten to be negative – because in this game, you always need to be looking over your shoulder. One such team that serves as a perfect example of that is Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite the fact that they’re just a matter of hours away from their first European game under the bright lights of Molineux for nearly forty years.
The next step
The big question surrounding the club right now is simple: where are all the signings? That seems pretty broad and potentially a little bit unfair, and realistic Wolves fans will be well aware of that fact. The club is coming off the back of, in many ways, the best season that many supporters have ever since throughout their lifetime. They secured Europa League qualification, they finished seventh in the Premier League, they beat most of the top teams in the division, and they were able to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
The fact that a lot of supporters are starting to talk about the top four is worrying, because they’re massively getting ahead of themselves. This Wolves team is good, but we need to stop pretending like it’s going to be a walk in the park for them next season. Of course, on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got the fans that are being incredibly pessimistic about the signings, and there just appears to be no real middle ground.
Stay calm
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Wolves have accomplished up to this point, and at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with what Nuno is doing in the transfer window. He’s taking his time, he isn’t rushing into things, and he’s making sure that he picks the right players for the challenges that face him in the next few months. The Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup are all going to drain this squad, and while they do need a few more players in order to deal with that, fans are forgetting that there’s still a few weeks left yet before the window actually closes.
They may be leaving things a little bit late, but it’s not over until it’s over – and if we’ve come to learn anything from Wolves in the last few years, it’s to expect the unexpected.
In terms of ambitions and all of that, to Wolves fans, we’d just say this: sit back and enjoy the ride. There are thousands upon thousands of fans up and down the country that would kill to be in the kind of position that the Midlands side currently find themselves in, and they need to forget about their egos and forget about what’s happened to them in the past.
It’s almost like they’re still a little bit damaged as a club, but with one more strong campaign, they’ll officially be back in business as one of English football’s best representatives.
