Sunday sees some Premier League teams play their first fixtures of season 2019/20. Here is what is happening in a big day of football in the English top-flight:
Leicester v Wolves (Kick-off 2 PM)
Leicester and Wolves kick-off the new Premier League campaign at the King Power Stadium, with both teams looking to break into the top-flight top-six this season.
The Foxes have brought in the likes of Ayoze Perez, Dennis Praet and Youri Tielemans, while also losing England centre-back Harry Maguire to Manchester United. Brendan Rodgers side are an exciting and vibrant prospect ahead of the new campaign. However, the team from the Midlands will need to do better than at the end of last season, when they won just one of their last five games.
Wolves surprised everybody last season by finishing seventh place on their return to the top-flight from the Championship. Nuno Espirito Santo likes to keep his squad close-knitted.
However, the Portuguese boss has managed to add Spanish centre-back Jose Vallejo and Italian striker Patrick Cutrone to their squad. The distraction of the Europa League may mean the squad may suffer from fatigue with the squad being relatively small heading into the new campaign.
Santo’s side finished last season with three wins in their last four outings in the Premier League. One aspect that the visitors need to improve upon this season is their away form, as they won just one of their last seven league matches on their travels.
Manchester United v Chelsea (Kick-off 4:30 PM)
It was not quite the summer of changes expected in Manchester. However, the Red Devils did bring in Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was the big exit, as the Belgian international left for Inter.
United finished their Premier League campaign in poor fashion, as they failed to record a win in their last five league matches of the season. One of their biggest problems at the end of the campaign was scoring goals, as the Red Devils scored just twice in those five winless games.
United’s record at home in the league is usually strong. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side suffered two defeats in their last three league games of last season at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are slight favourites to record a victory.
Chelsea enjoyed a superb campaign last season, clinching a Champions League spot and winning the Europa League. Boss Maurizio Sarri has left for Juventus, and club legend Frank Lampard has replaced the Italian in the Blues dugout.
The Blues have also suffered the loss of talisman Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. A transfer ban has also meant the club from the capital has been unable to strengthen their squad this summer.
Like United’s form towards the end of last season, Chelsea’s form was also questionable, as the Blues won just once in their final five games of the campaign. The team from south west London also struggled on their travels towards the end of the league campaign, winning just once in their last five away matches.
