On Sunday afternoon, Arsenal and Tottenham go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium in the first north London derby of the season. Both teams are looking to bounce back from defeats last time out.
Arsenal (Odds of 7/5 for victory)
The home side has started their campaign in decent form, winning their opening two matches against Newcastle and Burnley before suffering a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool last time out.
The loss on Merseyside ended a four-game unbeaten run for the Gunners dating back to last season. Unai Emery’s team will be looking to bounce back from the defeat against their bitter rivals.
Arsenal’s recent home record will make the Gunners highly confident of a victory in this clash, as they have won 11 of their last 13 home matches in the English top-flight.
Emery’s team have also scored at least two goals in 12 of their last 13 home games. With Spurs mixed start to the campaign, that prolific run of form may well continue in this clash. The Gunners are favourites to pick up their third league win of the campaign.
Tottenham (Odds of 9/5)
The visitors have endured an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign. Mauricio Pochettino’s team won their opening game of the season 3-1 at Aston Villa, before drawing with Manchester City and then suffering a shock defeat against Newcastle last time out.
Spurs have a poor recent record in the Premier League going back to last season, as they have won just once in six outings in the English top-flight, having suffered three defeats in the process.
In truth, the visitors could have done without a visit to the Gunners before the international break. However, they will be hoping to bounce back from that woeful result last time out and record a derby win.
One major concern for Pochettino’s team is their away form in the Premier League. The visitors have suffered defeat in six of their last seven matches on their travels in the top-flight, failing to win in the process.
A big factor in Spurs poor recent away form is their defensive displays, as they have kept just one clean sheet in ten Premier League games away from the capital, failing to keep a clean away from home in eight league matches.
Spurs have won just twice at Arsenal in the Premier League era in 27 visits. On current form it does not look like that record will improve on Sunday. Although a 2-0 League Cup win at the Emirates Stadium last season may just give the visitors a slight boost.
Tottenham boss Pochettino has a mixed record against Arsenal, as he has both four and lost four matches against the Gunners, while also picking up six draws. Of course, some of those results were obtained with Southampton.
Prediction
While both teams head into this clash on the back of defeats, they will be heading into the game in very different moods. Arsenal will not be too down about a defeat at Liverpool, while Spurs defeat against Newcastle was poor.
We are backing the home win and the under 2.5 goals seems to be a decent outside bet at odds of 11/8, as six of the last seven north London derbies have produced under 2.5 goals.
Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 7/5 (All odds taken from Bet365)
