On Thursday night, England host Montenegro at Wembley Stadium in Group A of qualifying for next year’s European Championships.

The home side has coasted through much of their qualifying campaign for next years European Championships. Gareth Southgate’s team have won five of their last six games in Group A. The visitors can no longer qualify for Euro 2020, as they have taken just three points from their seven games in Group A. Montenegro’s poor form in qualifying did not just start in the current campaign, as they have now failed to win in nine qualifiers for European Championships, having suffered six defeats in the process.

The visitors have had major problems at both ends of the pitch in a group they could have had a chance of qualifying from, with England the only elite team in the group. Instead, the visitors have conceded at least two goals in three of their last four qualifiers, while failing to find the net.

Since making their debut in European Championship qualifying back in 2010, Montenegro have struggled for away wins. In fact, they have won just twice in their 13 matches on the road. They have also lost eight of their last 11 away games in qualifying for the European Championships.

Montenegro have failed to beat England in five competitive meetings, losing their last two meetings with the Three Lions. They did, however, claim a draw at Wembley in the first-ever competitive meeting between the two sides. A draw in current circumstances would be a fantastic result.

Conclusion

There is absolutely no value in backing the England win or even the over 2.5 goals scored, despite both those are likely outcomes. Therefore, we will have to look at other markets. With that in mind, England’s Raheem Sterling at odds of 3/1 to be the first goalscorer is not a terrible bet.

Also backing England to win by a margin of three goals at odds of 10/3 looks like an interesting one.
