Prediction and odds for the game: Aston Villa (1/4) v Liverpool (7/1)
We are taking a punt in this unusual game by backing the home win at odds of 1/4.
When: Tuesday 17th December 2019, Kick-off 7:45 PM
Where: Villa Park
On Tuesday night, Premier League leaders Liverpool face a trip to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
Aston Villa
The Villans will fancy their chances of progressing into the last four of the competition with Liverpool set to field a team made up mostly of fringe players and youngsters. Despite the fact that top-flight survival is their priority, the team from the Midlands will see this as a golden opportunity to make the semi-finals of a domestic cup competition.
Villa are currently only outside the top-flight relegation zone courtesy of superior goal difference to 18th place Southampton. Dean Smith’s team have failed to win in four games, having suffered three straight defeats.
The home side have enjoyed a relatively comfortable passage to the last eight of the competition, seeing off Crewe, Brighton and Midlands rival Wolves in the last round. The Villans have also managed to score at least two goals in all of the previous three rounds of the competition.
Villa are likely to field a full-strength team in an attempt at making it through to the next round of the competition.
Liverpool
With Liverpool’s senior team playing Mexican side Monterrey on Wednesday in the FIFA Club World Cup, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and the majority of his first-team squad will be in Dubai. That means Liverpool under-23 boss Neil Critchley will be in charge of the team in the Midlands.
The Reds have fielded weakened sides in the previous rounds. In the last round, Klopp’s team defeated Arsenal on penalties after an incredible 5-5 draw at Anfield. The Merseysider’s had beaten MK Dons in the previous round.
Liverpool are of course top of the Premier League and looking set to run away with the league title. They have also won their previous five games in all competitions, but by fielding mostly full strength teams.
The Reds have won four of the previous five meetings in all competitions with Villa. They have also won on three of their last four visits to Villa Park.
Conclusion
This game is being played in bizarre circumstances, so it is hard to judge. Villa have struggled for wins of late in the Premier League. However, this is a fantastic chance for the home side. At odds of 1/4, considering that they are likely to face a weakened Liverpool XI, Villa are not terrible odds.
Whoever plays for Liverpool they tend to be involved in high scoring games, so we are also backing the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/11.
Verdict: Back the home win at odds of 1/4 and/or the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/11.
