Prediction and odds for the game: Gangwon (17/10) v Seoul (6/4)
We are backing the draw
When: Sunday, 10th May 2020 Kick-off 8:30 AM
Where: The Chuncheon Songam Stadium
On Sunday morning, Gangwon host Seoul at the Chuncheon Songam Stadium, as both teams look to kick-off their K-League campaigns off with a victory.
Gangwon
The home team finished sixth-place in the K-League table last season, six points off the AFC Champions League qualifying spots. A four-game winless run at the end of last season proved fatal to their bid for qualification for continental action. Not only did they fail to win those four games, but they also suffered three defeats in the process.
Poor defensive displays towards the end of the campaign scuppered their top-three hopes, as Gangwon conceded at least two goals in seven of their last eight matches in the South Korean top-flight.
An inconsistent end to last season on home soil also had an impact on their final position in the table, as the home side won just three of their last seven league matches on home soil. Despite their relative inconsistency at home, Gangwon were a big attacking threat on soil, scoring at least twice in 11 of their last 12 league matches.
The home side has a good recent record against Seoul, as they are unbeaten against the home side in four matches in the South Korean top-flight. However, on the other hand, they have won just six of the last 23 meetings between the two teams.
Seoul
The visitors finished third-place in the K-League last season, beating Pohang Steelers to the last AFC Champions League spot courtesy of a superior goal difference. The team from capital finished third despite a woeful end to the season that saw them record just one win in their last nine league matches, including failing to win in their last five matches in the K-League.
A lack of goals towards the end of the league campaign was Seoul’s main problem, as they failed to score in their last three matches in the South Korean top-flight. Their anaemic attacking displays contributed to three of their last four league matches producing under 2.5 goals.
Seoul struggled for results on their travels towards the end of season 2019. The visitors won just one of their last eight away games in the K-League, failing to win any of their last three matches on their travels. While the visitor’s recent away games have not all necessarily been high-scoring, both teams have scored in five of their last six away games.
Conclusion
Both teams finished last season in poor form. Arguably, there is not much difference between them in terms of quality. With that in mind, we are backing the draw. The other bet we are backing is under 2.5 goals scored, as we believe it will be relatively tight.
Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 12/5 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at evens (All odds are taken from Bet365)
