On Tuesday evening, Werder Bremen host Bayern Munich at the Weserstadion, in what could be a season-defining game for the home side in the Bundesliga.

Florian Kohfeldt’s team have given themselves a lifeline in the relegation battle of late. A 5-1 win at bottom of the table Paderborn last time out moved Werder level on points with Fortuna Dusseldorf, who occupy the relegation play-off spot. With time running out the win was a potentially vital one.

The home side’s form since the restart has been mixed. However, at least they have shown a bit of determination in recent games, something that was missing before the enforced break.

Despite their recent slightly upturn in form, Werder’s league record at home remains abysmal. They have failed to win in 13 home matches in the Bundesliga while suffering defeat in nine of their last ten league outings in the German top-flight. Incredibly, Werder have scored just once in their last nine home games in the Bundesliga. At the other end of the pitch, they have also conceded at least two goals in nine of their last 11 league matches on home soil.

Bayern Munich

The reigning champions moved one step closer to their eighth straight Bundesliga last time out by recording a 2-1 win over Monchengladbach. The victory means that Hansi Flick’s team are seven points clear of challengers Dortmund, with only three games to go. A victory here would seal the title for the Bavarians.

Bayern have been relentless in the Bundesliga since the end of 2019, winning 16 of their last 17 league games and remaining unbeaten. One of the key factors in their success recent run in the top-flight has been their fantastic attacking displays. The visitors have scored at least twice in nine of their last ten league outings. They have also broken a Bundesliga record for goals scored during the current campaign by racking up 90 goals.

The champions form on their travels of late has unsurprisingly been strong, as they have now notched eight straight away victories. Once again, Flick’s team have been impressive in attack, scoring at least two goals in seven of the eight straight away victories.

Bayern have been something of a bogey team for Werder, as the Bavarians have beaten the home team in the last 18 meetings in all competitions.

Conclusion

Werder Bremen have improved, but Bayern simply just keep winning. There is no value in backing the away win, though. Instead, we are backing the over 2.5 goals scored, as Werder have been poor at the back at home against a Bayern team who could well back a well-rested Robert Lewandowski into their starting line-up, not to mention Thomas Muller too.

We are also taking a punt on both teams to score, as Werder need to pick up a result, so may go into this clash with a more cavalier approach than usual.
