On Monday night, Perugia and Trapani meet in what could be a crucial game in the battle for survival in Italy’s Serie B.
Perugia
The home side looks to be in a strong position in the fight for survival in the Italian second tier. They are five points clear of the automatic relegation spots but are just three points ahead of Pescara who occupy the relegation play-off spot. A point in this game should be enough to ensure safety. However, they could be punished heavily if they slip up in this clash.
Their position has only become slightly dangerous in the last few weeks, as they have only won one of their previous seven matches in Serie B. The one victory came last time out, in a 2-0 win at Virtus Entella. The game saw Massimo Oddo’s team claim a second straight clean sheet in Serie B.
Perugia’s home form has not helped their chances of nailing down a spot in the second tier for next season, as they have won just one of their last seven league games on home soil. One positive for the home side is that they have kept clean sheets in three of their previous four league games on home soil.
Trapani
The visitors have experienced a difficult campaign back Serie B and currently sit second from bottom in the table. However, a recent run of improved form has given Fabrizio Castore’s team a chance of survival. Although escaping to 15th spot, the berth that Perugia currently occupies, they are just two points away from the relegation play-off spots.
Trapani’s survival hopes have been kept alive by a run of just one defeat in their last 12 games in Serie B. The problem for the visitors has been drawing too many games, as half those 12 matches have finished all square.
They have struggled for victories on their travels of late Trapani, having failed to win in 11 away games in Serie B. However, four of their last five matches on the road have produced draws. Their recent matches on their travels have been relatively high-scoring, with over 2.5 goals scored in four of their previous six away matches. Both teams have also scored in their previous five away games on the road.
Conclusion
Neither of these sides is in great form, although it could be argued that the visitors have been in marginally better league form of late. For us, this could be a tight game, so we are backing a low-scoring draw. The point may well be enough to confirm Perugia’s position in Serie B. It may also not end Trapani’s chances of escaping the drop zone, depending on results elsewhere.
