Prediction and odds for the game: Brentford (3/5) v Swansea (9/2)
We are taking a punt on the away win
When: Wednesday, 29th July 2020, Kick-off 19:45
Where: Griffin Park
On Wednesday night, Brentford and Swansea go head-to-head in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg. The first leg first 1-0 to the Swans, so it is all to play for at Griffin Park.
Brentford
The Bees have chosen a terrible time for their form to desert them, as the first leg defeat at the Liberty Stadium means that Thomas Frank’s team has now lost their last three games in the Championship, including losing their final two games of the regular league campaign.
Despite being one of the league’s best teams to watch, they are in major danger of missing out on promotion to the Premier League. Surprisingly the goals have dried up of late, as the home side has scored just once in their last three games. The lack of goals is a surprise considering that Ollie Watkins, Mohamed Said Benrahma, Brian Mbeumo and Jay DaSilva have all managed to get into double figures this season in the second tier.
Brentford have a pretty strong recent home record in the Championship, having won six of their previous nine league matches at Griffin Park. A 2-1 defeat against Barnsley in their last home league match ended an eight-game undefeated run on home soil.
Swansea
The Swans only snuck into the play-offs on the final day in extraordinary circumstances. However, a 1-0 victory at the Liberty Stadium in the first leg has edged them ahead in this tie. The first leg win means that Steve Cooper’s team have not only won their last three Championship games but are also unbeaten in four matches in the second tier. If they maintain that unbeaten run at Griffin Park, they will book their place in the play-off final.
Swansea have been difficult to beat on their travels of late in the Championship, as they have lost just once in their previous nine away games in the second tier. They are also undefeated in six league games on the road. The Swans have been prolific on the road of late in the Championship, scoring at least twice in five of their six unbeaten away games.
The Welsh side has had the better of the recent meetings between these two teams, winning eight of the last ten meetings with the Bees in all competitions. However, the visitors did lose the league game between these two teams at Griffin Park earlier in the season.
Conclusion
Brentford’s form seems to have fallen off a cliff of late and Swansea seem to have the all-important momentum. We are taking a punt on an away win, as Cooper’s team have appeared full of confidence in recent games, while the home side has struggled for form. We are also backing over 2.5 goals, as Brentford were the top scorers in the Championship, while Swansea have been free-scoring on their travels of late.
Verdict: We are backing the away win at odds of 9/2 and over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
