On Wednesday night, Atalanta and PSG go head-to-head in Lisbon, as both teams eye up a place in the last four of the Champions League.
Atalanta
The Nerazzurri have been one of the most impressive and exciting attacking teams to watch in the European game this season. Under Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta finished in the Serie A champions League qualification spots, while outscoring all their rivals in the Italian top-flight.
Many will underestimate the boys from Bergamo, but they have the potential to beat any team in the European game, PSG included.
Atalanta are in the last eight of the competition, despite losing their first three group games. Since then the Italian team have been in formidable European form. They are now five games unbeaten in Europe’s elite competition, having claim victories in their previous four matches. They have also found the net at least twice in all four of those recent wins.
The Italian side made easy work of Valencia in the last-16, beating Los Ches 8-4 on aggregate. They will certainly not head into this clash with any trepidation, as their opponents are the favourites to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.
PSG
The Champions League is the holy grail for the big-spending French champions. Unsurprisingly, Thomas Tuchel’s claimed yet another Ligue One title, despite the curtailment of the French top-flight due to COVID-19.
The Parisians have never quite lived up to their superstar billing in recent years in the Champions League. However, there is a feeling that this could be their year to finally win the continents biggest prize for the first time in their history. They will need to beware of complacency though, as Atalanta are unlikely to be easy opponents.
PSG will be buoyed by their recent Champions League record, as Tuchel’s team has won six of their previous eight matches in Europe’s elite competition. They have also scored at least two goals in two of their last three European matches. The French outfit saw Dortmund 3-2 on aggregate in the last-16 to book their quarter-final spot.
One crucial factor in this clash could be if young French superstar Kylian Mbappe recovers from an ankle injury in time to face the Nerazzurri. He is still a fitness doubt but has a chance to feature. The likely absence of midfielder Marco Verratti will be a blow for the Parisians.
Conclusion
This is arguably the most intriguing of the ties in the Champions League last eight, as it really could go either way. PSG are the favourites, but Atalanta are such a dangerous attacking team. We are going to get splinters by sitting on the fence and predicting a draw at full-time. We are also backing over 2.5 goals scored, as both teams possess dynamic attacks, even if PSG could be without Mbappe.
Verdict: We are backing the draw at odds of 14/5 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 8/15. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
