On Saturday night, Manchester City and Lyon go head-to-head at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in the last of the four Champions League quarter-finals.

Manchester City

This game represents Manchester City’s whole season now after they failed to retain the Premier League title. The Champions League has been the trophy that the Citizens have wanted to get their hands on since the team started to become successful. However, it is the only major trophy that has eluded them.

Pep Guardiola, of course, has a previous history with the competition, having previously won the trophy with his great Barcelona team. His failure to win the trophy with both Bayern Munich and City has led to questions marks over the Catalan boss. Winning the Champions League this season would certainly be a good answer to his critics.

City have been hard to beat in this competition, losing just once in their previous 17 Champions League games. The Citizens also head into this clash on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run, including beating Spanish champions Real Madrid home and away in the last-16.

The men from Manchester have been prolific in front of goal in the Champions League, as they have scored two or more goals in seven of their nine undefeated matches in Europe’s elite competition. Both teams have also scored in their last five matches in this competition.

Lyon

The French team have certainly been one of the biggest surprise packages in this season’s Champions League, despite underperforming in the French top-flight and missing out on European football for next season. Rudi Garcia’s team also recently suffered a penalty defeat to French dominant force PSG in the League Cup. OL’s only hope of continental qualification for next season is if they win this competition, which looks unlikely at this stage.

Lyon will fancy their chances of causing another upset, though, after beating eliminating Italian giants Juventus on the away goal rule in the last-16. Their progression to the competitions last eight was a surprise, as OL had won just three of their previous 15 matches in the Champions League. They had also recorded just one victory in their previous four European outings.

The French team tend to be involved in high-scoring games in the Champions League, as six of their last seven games in the competition have produced at least two goals. Judging by City’s strengths and weaknesses this game could follow the same trend.

Conclusion

There is absolutely no value in backing the City win in this game. The first bet we are recommending is for both teams to score, as we know the Citizens are lethal going forward, but defensively vulnerable. The other bet we are backing is Kevin De Bruyne to score anytime, as the Belgian international is enjoying one of his most consistent seasons in front of goal.
