The French team continue to surprise teams in Europe’s elite competition. Once again Rudi Garcia’s team are major underdogs to make it through to Sunday’s Champions League final. OL will be buoyed by their success in the previous rounds and are unlikely to be easy opponents for the Bavarian giants.
Garcia’s team not only progressed past Juventus in the last-16 of the competition, they then recorded a shock 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the last eight. Striker Moussa Dembele came off the substitutes bench to score a brace against City, having previously failed to score in this season’s Champions League.
Considering that Garcia’s team are in the last four of Europe’s elite competition, OL do not have a great winning record in the Champions League. The French team has won just four of their previous 16 in this competition.
Lyon’s recent matches in Europe have been high-scoring of late, as there have been over 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four matches. Considering their opponents on Wednesday, that high-scoring trend is likely to continue in this semi-final.
Bayern Munich
The Bavarian giants head into this game on the back of some red-hot form. An incredible 8-2 win over Catalan giants Barcelona in the last eight was a signal of Bayern’s intent of winning the Champions League this season.
Once again, Bayern Munich cantered to the Bundesliga title despite a rocky start to the campaign under Croatian boss Niko Kovac. Since the appointment of Hansi Flick, the five-time European champions have looked like a different team.
It could be argued that Bayern have been the best team in of the top European leagues in 2020. Their Champions League record this season of nine straight wins speaks for itself. The key to that impressive recent European record has been Bayern’s lethal attack. The Bavarians have scored at least twice in all nine of their games in Europe’s elite competition during season 2019/20.
Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has been highly prolific at the top of the European game for a decade. This season the 31-year-old has been his usual lethal self in front of goals, registering a Champions League high of 14 goals. Lewandowski is likely to be the biggest attacking threat to OL in a highly potent Bayern team.
Conclusion
Lyon will find it tough to beat a Bayern Munich team who are full of quality and in great form. We expect this to be the end of the Champions League road for the French team. The Bayern win offers little value, but as always with the German team’s games the goals market seems a logical choice.
Lewandowski is the ace poacher in the Bayern jungle. However, another highly experienced star, Thomas Muller has shone at times this season. We are backing Muller to be an anytime goalscorer in this clash.
