Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (9/4) v Liverpool (11/10)
We are backing Timo Werner to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 11/8
When: Sunday, 20th September 2020, Kick-off 16:30
Where: Stamford Bridge
On Sunday afternoon, Chelsea hosts Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, in a massive early-season Premier League encounter.
Chelsea
Frank Lampard’s team kicked-off their top-flight campaign with a 3-1 opening weekend victory at Brighton. New signings Germany internationals Timo Werner and Kai Havertz made the debuts, with the former winning a penalty kick for Chelsea’s opening goal. New signings Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech all still have their debuts to come. The latter is sidelined through injury. Although, the others may be available for this clash, as both have reportedly returned to training.
The victory against the Seagulls on Monday means that the Blues have claimed five wins in their last seven matches in the Premier League dating back to last season.
Chelsea finished last season in good form on home soil in the Premier League, claiming victories in their last six league outings at Stamford Bridge while conceding just once in their last five home matches in the English top-flight.
One negative for the Blues is they have lost four of the last five meetings with the visitors in all competitions. Chelsea have also won just two of the last seven games against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. This game is certainly a test of the home side’s title credentials.
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp’s team opened their campaign with a nervy 4-3 win over top-flight new boys Leeds United. The winning goal came through a Mohamed Salah penalty kick with just two minutes left on the clock. The victory means that the Merseysider’s have claimed three straight league wins, having scored at least three goals in three wins.
The visitors have only failed to score once in their last 48 Premier League games. Ironically, the last two league games that Liverpool have failed to score in were against local rivals Everton, both at Goodison Park in goalless draws. The Reds prolific scoring has contributed to five of their last six league games producing over 2.5 goals.
Liverpool’s away form in the Premier League has not been great, as the Merseysider’s have only claimed two wins in six league games on their travels. In a familiar trend, five of Liverpool’s six away matches in the English top-flight.
Conclusion
Despite both teams winning their opening league games of the Premier League campaign, neither team produced convincing displays. Liverpool’s defence looked very shaky against Leeds, which could certainly work in the Blues favour. We are backing the draw in this clash, as Chelsea look dangerous and Liverpool do not look at their best but are not easy to defeat.
The other bet we are backing is Chelsea striker Timo Werner to be an anytime goalscorer. The pacey forward looked a major threat against Brighton and could cause the Liverpool defence big problems.
Verdict: We are backing Timo Werner to be an anytime goalscorer and/or the draw at odds of 13/5 (All odds are taken from Bet365)
