Prediction & odds for the game: Luton (11/1) v Manchester United (1/4)
When: Tuesday, 22nd September @ 8.15pm K.O
Where: Kenilworth Road
Luton Town will attempt to cause one of the first big upsets of the new domestic season when they host Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
Luton
The Hatters have been on quite the run over the course of the last few years, rising back up to the second tier of English football before managing to avoid relegation thanks to an end of season surge. Now, there are rumblings that they could even make a push for the Premier League – and if you’d have said that to even the most confident of Luton fans five years ago, they would’ve laughed in your face.
The momentum that Luton have been able to carry forward from last season has been hugely beneficial from them after a hectic start to the new campaign. They started off with a surprise 3-1 triumph over Norwich City in the Carabao Cup before edging past Barnsley in their opening game of the Championship season. Then, after beating Reading to book their place in the third round of the cup against United, they beat Derby 2-1 to continue their fantastic 100% start.
Manchester United
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has some problems to solve at Old Trafford and that much is obvious. He may be in charge of the great Manchester United but it’s pretty obvious to see that having a great reputation simply isn’t enough anymore. You can’t just splash the cash and hope for the best, either, and that’s going to make the next few weeks and months incredibly interesting.
United ended the Premier League season really well but ever since they lost to Sevilla in their Europa League semi-final, there has been a lingering sense of pessimism surrounding the club. After they received an extra week off to prepare for the Premier League season due to their European exploits, fans were expecting big things – but instead, they got a 3-1 trouncing at the hands of Crystal Palace.
Conclusion
This is the kind of David vs Goliath clash that doesn’t actually feel all too much like a true David vs Goliath meeting – mainly because of where both clubs are at to start the new season. It may sound ridiculous but it almost feels inevitable that Luton are going to take the lead, forcing United to come out and really go after their Championship counterparts. From that point on the Red Devils should take over, coming from behind to win the game and enter the next round.
We’re expecting excitement and with that excitement comes some great attacking play, which is why we’re backing the over 2.5 goals market – so buckle up.
Verdict: Back the away at odds of 1/4 and the over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 4/6 (All odds are taken from bet365).
