The Daily Mail are reporting that out-of-favour Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli is confident of making a loan move to French giants PSG before the January transfer window closes. A switch to the French capital would see the England international reunite with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Struggled to perform under Jose Mourinho
Dele Alli looks like a shadow of the player who performed so ably at Spurs before the arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach. Media reports allege that the Portuguese boss does not like Alli’s attitude. This would not be a major surprise considering that clips of the midfielder from the recent documentary ‘All or nothing’ portrayed the former MK Dons star as a poor trainer. Mourinho even labelled him ‘lazy’ in the documentary.
This season the midfielder has played a sub-total of 74 minutes in the Premier League. The vast majority of that was playing the first half of the 1-0 home defeat by Everton on the opening day of the campaign. It is clear to see that something is not right for Alli in north London, as for the last few seasons he has been one of the first names on the Spurs teamsheet when fit of course.
Pochettino got the best out Alli
The move to PSG would certainly make sense for the player and PSG. The presence of Pochettino in Paris would be a big factor in any move. The Argentinian head coach got the best out of the attacking midfielder during the pair’s time together at Tottenham. In fact, Pochettino turned Alli into of the best attacking players in the Premier League. Mourinho is famous for his man-management, but there is usually one big-name player wherever he goes he has problems with. They are usually left out of the team or even sold.
Pochettino is also renowned for his ability to deal with players. Alli seemed to respond to the Argentinian bosses style. It is questionable whether he worked harder for his former boss, but nobody really cares if he is working hard or not if he is producing tangible results. Sometimes certain coaches indulge players who are perceived to not work hard because they still contribute to the team. That seems the case with Alli and Pochettino. The 24-year-old has not become a bad player overnight, yet cannot get a game for Tottenham.
Alli must leave Spurs to revive his career
Dele Alli is not even at the peak of his powers as a footballer just yet. However, he seems to be approaching a crossroads in his career. It seems that Mourinho no longer wants to play him and the Portuguese boss is unlikely to leave Spurs anytime soon.
That means Alli has to seek new pastures to revive his career. Mourinho is known to be stubborn and it seems that the Tottenham boss is unlikely to change his mind about the midfielder’s playing time. He could work harder, but there is no guarantee that would be enough for increased playing time.
Alli wants to play regularly to force his way back into the England squad ahead of the European Championships. Whether Spurs sanction a move before the window shuts is unknown, but if something doesn’t change then Dele Alli is unlikely to see much playing time for the rest of the season.
