Prediction and odds for the game: Everton (1/3) vs Sheffield Wednesday (9/1)
We are backing the home win
When: Sunday, 24th January 2021, Kick-off 20:00
Where: Goodison Park
On Sunday night, Everton host Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup. This clash will be down as a potential giant-killing waiting to happen.
Everton
Carlo Ancelotti’s team are enjoying a strong campaign, as the Toffees are currently in the thick of the race for European places in the Premier League. However, a good cup run wouldn’t go amiss at the Merseyside club, as they are currently on their longest post-war trophy drought. Their last trophy came back in 1995 when they lifted this trophy against Manchester United.
With their wily Italian head coach at the helm, there is real hope of success in the near future. The Toffees have a woeful recent record in this competition in recent years, winning just one of their last seven in the competition in 90 minutes. The Merseysider’s also needed extra time to see off Championship in the last round at Goodison Park.
The fact that they will head into this clash without Alex Iwobi, Lucas Digne, Allan, Fabian Delph and Niels Nkounkou is not great news. However, the Toffees top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit again and could return to the starting line-up.
Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls are currently in a relegation battle in the Championship, sitting 23rd in the table, ironically a point behind Everton’s opponents in the last round Rotherham.
Despite their lowly position, the visitors from Yorkshire are actually in good form heading to Merseyside for this encounter, as Wednesday are currently unbeaten in five matches, including four victories. The visitors last outing was a 2-0 win at Exeter City in the third round of this competition, which was way back on January 9th.
Wednesday have a decent recent record in the FA Cup, having won three of their last four outings in the competition. Their recent games in the famous old competition have been relatively low-scoring, though, as there has been under 2.5 goals scored in three of their last four matches in the FA Cup.
Sheffield Wednesday also has a good recent away record in the FA Cup, as they have won four of their last five matches on their travels, including their last three away games on the road.
Conclusion
Both teams may be a bit rusty having not played for more than two weeks. However, despite some injury problems, we are backing Everton’s superior quality to come out on top in this one.
The other bet we recommend is over 2.5 goals scored, as the Toffees have been relatively potent in attack when Dominic Calvert, James Rodriguez and Richarlison have played together. Ancelotti may choose to select all three, as he looks to add more silverware to his massive career collection.
Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 1/3 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at odds of 13/20. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
