Prediction and odds for the game: Monchengladbach (8/1) vs Manchester City (3/10)
We are backing Manchester City half-time/full-time at odds of 5/6
When: Wednesday, 24th February 2021, Kick-off 20:00
Where: Borussia Park
On Wednesday night, Monchengladbach face a tough challenge as the Foals welcome Manchester City Borussia Park for the first leg of the last-16 of the Champions League.
Monchengladbach
The German side has undergone a poor few weeks, which has involved the announcement that head coach Marco Rose is set to join Dortmund this summer. There has been speculation that the news has unsettled some of the players. Whether or not it has is debatable. However, the Foals recent form has not been great. The home side head into this clash on the back of just one win in their last five matches in all competitions.
Rose’s side does have quality though, proven by the fact that they qualified for the knockout stages from a group containing Real Madrid, Inter and Shakhtar Donetsk. However, the Foals recent record in Europe’s elite competition is not a great one, as they have won two of their previous nine games in the Champions League.
Their recent European matches have certainly offered value for money when it comes to goals, as five of their last six matches in the competition.
Manchester City
Unlike the home team, Manchester City are in stellar form heading into this clash. The Citizens look to be running away with the Premier League title and it will take something special to stop Pep Guardiola’s team this season.
City are 25 games unbeaten in all competitions, while recording wins in their last 18 outings matches. Last time out, the visitors recorded a 1-0 win over Arsenal but were certainly not at their best in the clash.
While they look on course for the English top-flight title, City will be hoping to finally win the holy grail that is the Champions League this season. The Citizens came through a comfortable group with ease, winning five of their six games in a group also involving Porto, Marseille and Olympiakos. Their defensive strength was the key to their good results in the group stages, as they conceded just once in their six matches.
City have a decent away record in the Champions League too, as not only are they unbeaten in seven European matches, but they have also suffered just one defeat in their previous 12 outings on their European travels. The men from Manchester didn’t concede a goal in the group stages on their travels either.
Conclusion
Manchester City are undoubted favourites for this game and the tie. However, the away win offers very little value. Instead, we are backing Manchester City half-time/full-time at odds of 5/6, as it offers slightly better odds. Guardiola’s team just have such momentum that we don’t believe Monchengladbach will have an answer. The other bet we recommend is for both teams to score. The Foals have the attacking ability to cause City defensive problems, so we don’t think that’s an awful bet in a game that doesn’t seem to have any outstanding offers.
Verdict: We are backing Manchester City half-time/full-time at odds of 5/6 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
