Prediction and odds for the game: Everton (21/20) vs Southampton (5/2)
We are backing the home win
When: Monday, 1st March 2021, Kick-off 20:00
Where: Goodison Park
On Monday night, Everton will look to boost their European hopes as they welcome Southampton to Goodison Park in the Premier League.
Everton
The Toffees have been such an inconsistent team this season. That unpredictable form continued last time out when Carlo Ancelotti’s team recorded a 2-0 win at arch-rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. The win came after back-to-back league defeats Against Fulham and Manchester City. The win at Anfield was only the Toffees second win in their last seven league outings. However, it will give the Merseysider’s a massive boost to push on to claim a European spot this season.
Everton are just three points behind fifth-place Chelsea and have a game in hand on Thomas Tuchel’s team. If they can find some sort of consistency then the Toffees could well seal a top-six finish in the Premier League this season.
One facet of their game that needs to improve if they are to finish in the European spots for the rest of the season is their home form. Incredibly the Toffees have lost four of their last five league matches at Goodison Park in the top-flight. With a squad close to full fitness, that record should improve in the next few months.
Southampton
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team head into this game in poor form, as the Saints have failed to win in eight league matches, suffering seven defeats in the process. Last time out, the team from the south coast suffered a 3-0 defeat at Leeds. The defeat saw Southampton concede at least two goals for the fourth time in five top-flight matches.
Despite their awful run of form, the Saints are still eight points clear of the relegation zone. The team from the south coast look unlikely to be dragged into the danger zone but will be looking slightly nervously over their shoulders at the bottom three.
The visitors have failed to win in six away matches in the Premier League, losing their last four league matches on their travels. They have also failed to score in four of their last five matches away from home.
The Saints have struggled for victories at Goodison Park in the Premier League era, winning just once in their 21 visits. One Saints player who loves playing against Everton is Danny Ings who has scored five times in his career against the Toffees. The visitors could certainly do with the former-Liverpool striker finding the net on Monday night.
Conclusion
The Toffees have become a team that helps ends teams poor runs of results this season. However, the win at Liverpool felt like it could lead to a sea change in mentality. The return to finish of star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another bonus for Ancelotti’s team. We are backing the win. The other bet we recommend is over 2.5 goals, as Everton now have everybody fit and firing and the visitors have struggled in defence of late.
Verdict: We are backing the home win at odds of 21/20 and/or over 2.5 goals scored at evens (All odds are taken from Bet365).
