Prediction and odds for the game: Barcelona (11/5) vs Bayern Munich (21/20)
We are backing the away win
When: Tuesday, 14th September 2021, kick-off 20:00
Where: The Nou Camp
On Tuesday night, European heavyweights Barcelona and Bayern Munich face off at the Nou in gameweek one of Champions League Group E.
Barcelona
The Catalans giants saw their weekend match against Sevilla postponed. That means Ronald Koeman’s team should be well-rested ahead of this potentially pivotal opening game in Group E. The Blaugrana have enjoyed a solid post-Messi era. Netherlands international Memphis Depay has emerged as a potential new hero for the Catalan giants. The former Lyon star has scored two goals in his three La Liga appearances and is already showing his worth to his team.
He will be looking to impress once again for Barcelona, who have been handed a major challenge being drawn against the 2020 European champions. The Bavarians have become one of the home side’s bogey teams of late in European football’s elite competition. In fact, Barcelona have lost four of their last five meetings with the German giants conceding at least two goals in all four defeats. The last time the pair met was back in 2020 when Bayern recorded an extraordinary 8-2 at the Estadio Da Luz.
The Catalan giants head into this game on the back of a three-game winless run in the Champions League, having picked up just one draw and suffered two defeats.
Bayern Munich
The reigning German champions have hit form in recent games after drawing their opening match of the season at Monchengladbach. A 4-1 win at last season’s Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig last time out means that Bayern have won their last five competitive matches, while also scoring at least two goals in each of the outings.
Star striker Robert Lewandowski has already scored eight goals in all competitions this season. This looks set for yet another prolific campaign for the Polish international.
When it comes to the Champions League, Bayern Munich have been like a machine in recent seasons, winning 19 of their last 21 matches in European football’s elite competition. However, last season they exited the competition at the last-16 stage after suffering an away goals defeat against PSG.
Bayern Munich have not lost an away game in the Champions League since 2017 when they suffered a 3-0 against PSG in Paris. That run means they are 21 games unbeaten in the Champions League on their travels.
Conclusion
Barcelona are certainly a different team without Lionel Messi. His absence will no doubt take a while to get accustomed to for everybody involved with the Catalan club. There is never a good time to face Bayern and the German team travel to the Nou Camp in particularly fine form.
Our first recommendation is the away win, as Julian Nagelsmann’s team just seem to be getting stronger by the week. The other bet we recommend is for Memphis Depay to be an anytime goalscorer, as although Bayern are strong, we think the Dutch forward has enough ability to get on the scoresheet.
Our tips: We are backing Bayern Munich to win at odds of 6/5 and/or Memphis Depay to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 11/8. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
