On Wednesday night, Juventus host Chelsea at the Allianz Stadium in Group H of the Champions League, in what could be one of the most fascinating games of gameweek two of the competition.
Juventus
After a slightly underwhelming start to Max Allegri’s second spell in charge in Turin, the Bianconeri now seem to have found their feet. The grand old lady of the Italian game are now four games unbeaten in all competitions, including winning 3-0 at Malmo on gameweek one.
Back-to-back victories over Spezia and Sampdoria have lifted spirits at Juventus ahead of what promises to be a difficult challenge against the European champions.
Juventus have a good recent record in the Champions League, winning six of their last seven games in the competition. The Italian giants have also been prolific in those recent European wins, scoring at least two goals in all six wins. The Bianconeri have also won seven of their last eight home matches in Europe’s elite competition.
Chelsea
The European champions suffered their first real setback of the campaign last weekend, as Thomas Tuchel’s team suffered a 1-0 home defeat against defending champions, Chelsea. The Blues will be eager to bounce straight back to winning ways in Turin.
The team from south west London began the defence of their European title with a professional 1-0 win against Zenit in gameweek one. It may not have been the most convincing performance, but they got the result which is the most important thing.
The win means that the Blues head into this game on the back of a three-match winning run in European football’s elite competition. Chelsea have also lost just one of their previous 14 matches in the Champions League, which came in a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Porto in the quarter-final second leg of last season’s competition.
The visitor’s recent Champions League encounters have been low-scoring affairs, as their previous nine European matches have all produced under 2.5 goals. A big factor in those low-scoring affairs is that Chelsea have kept clean sheets in six of their previous eight matches in the competition.
The Blues have been strong on their travels in the Champions League. They are unbeaten in their previous six games in Europe’s elite competition, having recorded five victories.
Conclusion
Juventus have seen an upturn in fortunes of late, but we fancy Thomas Tuchel’s team to just edge this clash. We do believe it could be a slightly cagey encounter, so we are also backing under 2.5 goals scored too.
