On Wednesday night, Manchester United host Villarreal at Old Trafford in Group F of the Champions League, as the Red Devils look to bounce back from defeat last time out.

Manchester United

Following a good start to the campaign, United’s form has dipped of late and they head into this game on the back of three defeats in their previous four matches in all competitions. Last time out, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team suffered a late 1-0 home defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

A 2-1 defeat at Young Boys of Swiss in gameweek one of this competition was also a disappointing result for the men from Manchester. They will be looking to get their Champions League campaign back on track in this potentially tricky encounter.

United’s recent record in the Champions League does not bode well for a home win, as they have now lost four of their previous five games in European football’s elite competition. A leaky defence has been the Red Devils biggest problem, as they have conceded at least two goals in all four of those recent European defeats.

Villarreal

The Yellow Submarine have had a mixed start to the season, as although they are unbeaten in all competitions in 90 minutes, they have drawn seven of their eight competitive matches. Unai emery’s team are currently positioned in midtable of La Liga due to their inability to win matches.

Villarreal drew their opening group game against Atalanta 2-2 in an entertaining encounter. The draw ended a run of eight straight defeats for the Spanish outfit in European football’s elite competition. The visitors have also conceded at least two goals in eight of their last right matches in the Champions League.

The Yellow Submarine have certainly not been great travellers in the competition, as they have suffered six straight away defeats in Europe’s elite competition. The visitors have also failed to score in four of their last six away matches in the Champions League.

One plus for Villarreal is that Manchester United have failed to beat them in the last five games. However, all five of those meetings have finished in draws. The Yellow Submarine did beat United on penalty kicks in last season’s Europa League final though.

Conclusion

United have hit their first bump in the road of the season and this could be a tough encounter against a very well organised Villarreal team under former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery. We believe that this game will end all square. It could be a tight encounter too, as Villarreal will come to defend, just as they did at the weekend in picking up a point at Real Madrid. With that in mind, we are backing under 2.5 goals too.
