On Wednesday night, Liverpool host Atletico Madrid at Anfield in a game that could prove to be decisive in Group B of the Champions League.

The Merseysider’s currently hold the power in Group B, as Jurgen Klopp’s team has won all three of their group games. Another win or a draw in the Milan vs Porto match would see the Reds book their place in the last-16 of the competition for yet another season.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 15 matches in all competitions this season. A 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday ended a four-game winning competitive run for Klopp’s team. Included in that four-game winning run was a 3-2 win over Atletico in the reverse fixture. The result was slightly controversial, as Antoine Griezmann was issued with a red card early in the second half.

The Reds have been reasonably consistent of late in European football’s elite competition, as they have won six of their previous nine matches in the Champions League.

They are also unbeaten in four games at Anfield in the competition, having recorded three wins and three clean sheets in the process.

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone’s team were always going to find it difficult to maintain the intensity of last season’s La Liga title-winning campaign. The visitors form this season has not been terrible, but it has been slightly underwhelming compared to the consistency of the previous campaign.

Los Colchoneros recent form has been a good example of their consistency slipping, as a weekend 3-0 win over surprise package Real Betis ended a three-game winless run for the men from Madrid. Their return of four points from their opening three group games has also been a disappointing one. The Spanish champions are level on points with third-place Porto and could end gameweek four outside the qualifying spots for the last-16 of the competition.

The visitor’s recent form in the Champions League has been poor, as they have won just one of their previous five matches in the competition, having suffered three defeats in the underwhelming run. Rather uncharacteristically for a Simeone team, Atletico have also been poor at the back of late, having conceded at least two goals in three of their last four matches in the competition.

Conclusion

Liverpool have not been perfect this season, despite their recent unbeaten run. Amongst the goals and the good play this season, the Reds have also shown a vulnerability too. Jurgen Klopp’s team threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Brighton. However, the visitors have not been at their best in recent games either. We are backing the home team to record another narrow win against the Spanish champions. It could be another high-scoring affair like the reverse fixture, so we are also backing over 2.5 goals scored.
