Prediction and odds for the game: Bayern Munich (4/6) vs Barcelona (16/5)
We are backing over 3.5 goals scored at evens
When: Wednesday 8 December 2021, Kick-off 20:00
Where: The Allianz Arena
On Wednesday night, two of the biggest clubs in European football meet, as Bayern Munich host Barcelona at the Allianz Arena, in a massive game for the visitor’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League. The game will be played in an empty stadium due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Bayern Munich
The German giants have once again cruised through the group stages of the Champions League, taking a haul of 15 points so far. Julian Nagelsmann’s team have proven to be one of the most impressive teams in European football’s elite competition. However, they do not look as invincible as they have in previous seasons.
Last time out, Bayern recorded a somewhat fortunate 3-2 win at arch-rivals Dortmund in Der Klassiker, courtesy of a highly debatable penalty decision. The win moved Bayern four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
The German champions have a formidable recent record in this Champions League though, winning nine of their last ten games in the competition. Group E has proven a breeze for Nagelsmann’s team, as not only have they won all five matches, but they have also scored at least two goals in each of the five victories.
Barcelona
This is a massive game for Barcelona. The Catalan giants are second in the group behind their opponents. However, Xavi’s team are just two points above third-placed Benfica, who face a rather less daunting clash against Dynamo Kiev in their game. If Barcelona loses this game and their Portuguese group rivals record a victory, then the unthinkable of the visitors exiting the Champions League at the group stage will happen.
There is no doubt that Xavi has revitalised the team since taking up the role of head coach at his former club. However, a 1-0 defeat against Real Betis last time out brought the team and club back down to earth. The defeat ended a three-game unbeaten run under the club legend. Xavi and his team also have a mountain to climb to qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League.
After losing their opening two group games against Wednesday’s opponents and Benfica, Barcelona are now three games unbeaten in Europe’s elite competition. However, a lacklustre goalless draw at home against Benfica in their last group game could well come back to haunt the Blaugrana.
Conclusion
Although Bayern have not been perfect this season, the German champions are still likely to have too much quality for their desperate Catalan opponents. We are backing the home win a d a high-scoring game, so we are taking a punt on the over 3.5 goals scored, as Bayern Munich’s games never disappoint when it comes to goals.
Our Tips: We are backing the home win at odds of 4/6 and/or over 3.5 goals scored at evens. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
