It seems that Everton has imploded from the inside. The fans are angry at the clubs handling of every situation and quite rightly so. Evertonian’s have seen little success for close to three decades. This is currently the historic clubs longest ever trophy drought.
One of the major factors in the Merseysider’s failure is the club’s hierarchy seems to have no clue about running a football club. At this stage, it seems that the Toffees are a guide on how not to run a football club.
The news that Portuguese head coach Vitor Pereira is the favourite for the head coach’s position at the club has gone down like Mohamed Salah in a gentle breeze.
Farhad Moshiri is not the saviour after all
When Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri arrived at the club in 2016, he was considered to be a saviour. The club finally had an owner with the financial weight to push Everton on to the next level.
Unfortunately, it seems that rather than Moshiri pushing Everton into the Champions League, he is closer to pushing them into the Championship. Reports suggest that the billionaire is now at the point where he is not listening to his own board.
Instead, he is being advised by countryman Kia Joorabchian, a businessman who has contacts throughout football. Now that usually would be useful, if his advisor had not been involved in some of the worse football messes the modern game has ever seen.
He allegedly has a reputation for only looking after his own bank balance by recommending those contacts. This can get clubs into trouble just ask Reading or QPR, clubs he has had close relationships with in the past.
Unfortunately, it seems that Joorabchian has found another ATM at Everton. It is not hard to see that he is only looking after his own interests. He doesn’t care what happens to the football club. Farhad Moshiri must be a highly intelligent person to have become a billionaire. However, it seems he is stubborn and easily manipulated.
Poor recruitment has led to regression
The fact that Moshiri is not very knowledgeable about football has shown in the fact that Everton has spent over £600million since his arrival while bringing in just over half that amount in sales. What have they got to show for it? The team has gone backwards. It is now in a relegation dogfight, which has not been seen for a while at the club.
No doubt that poor recruitment has been led by his so-called advisors. The Toffees had a highly-regarded director of football in Marcel Brands, but the Dutchman left the club after reportedly Moshiri took the advice of then-head coach Rafa Benitez to dispense with his services.
Media reports suggest that Moshiri interfered with the football side of things and that he didn’t let Brands do his job. Reportedly Brands wanted to appoint Brighton’s Graham Potter’s as the head coach in the summer. However, reportedly ignored the Dutchman’s advice and the objection from the board and the fans to appoint former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
It was the sort of appointment that shows that Moshiri is not in touch with the fans. The Spaniard’s appointment was always an ill-fated one. He was never going to succeed as Toffees boss. It was a divisive appointment and Moshiri did not care.
Vitor Pereira is not wanted at Everton
If as reported Moshiri is set to appoint Portuguese head coach Vitor Pereira, it will be another appointment that will not sit well with the fans. The fact that Pereira is currently managing in the Chinese Super League and has no Premier League experience are two of the main concerns about the Portuguese.
The fact that he was deemed a failure in two spells at Turkish giants Fenerbahce and couldn’t save 1860 Munich from relegation to the third tier of German football are also two red flags regarding Pereira.
There have been other names linked with the club. The most popular one amongst Evertonian’s seems to be former Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard. The former England boss would offer Premier League experience, intelligence and the calmness needed to get the Toffees away from the relegation zone.
If Everton appointed the former England international then there would be fewer unhappy Evertonian’s and a better atmosphere around the club. The appointment of Vitor Pereira would just worsen the toxic mood surrounding the club. Most other clubs in Everton’s situation would make a logical appointment, not risk the club and teams’ future making this sort of appointment.
Most managerial appointments are gambles. However, it seems like the only three people in the world that want Pereira as head coach of Everton are the head coach himself, Moshiri and his non-official advisor.
Facing the risk of relegation this season
The club is imploding, while the team could not beat an egg on a football pitch at the moment. Only Arsenal have spent a longer sustained period in the English top-flight than the Toffees. Their last relegation was way back in 1951. However, there is a massive threat that Everton could suffer defeat this season.
The Toffees have won just one of their last 14 matches in the Premier League. At times they have lacked quality, passion and fight. On current form, they will be playing Championship football next season.
That is why Farhad Moshiri needs to get the managerial appointment right. While many will say that you cannot please all the fans, all the time, the Everton majority shareholder could at least please some of the people with a managerial appointment other than Pereira.
Who knows the appointment of Pereira could be the catalyst for brighter things for Everton. However, the reasons for the Portuguese’s appointment are part of a deeper problem at the club.
Now that is a massive worry for everybody connected with the club. Hopefully, the club will not implode as predicted, but the history of this sort of situation at a top-flight club suggests it will end in disaster for Everton Football club.
