Prediction and odds for the game: Gambia (7/1) vs Cameroon (1/2)
We are backing Cameroon to win
When: Saturday 29 January 2022, Kick-off 16:00
Where: The Stade Omnisport de Douala
On Saturday afternoon, Gambia and tournament hosts Cameroon clash in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations.
Gambia
The tournament debutants have certainly made a mark at this year’s competition. Tom Saintfiet’s team went through the group stages unbeaten, picking up two wins and a draw in a group containing Mali, Tunisia, and Mauritania. They then eliminated Guinea 1-0 in the round of 16.
Low-scoring games have been a trademark of their tournament so far, as all four of their games at the AFCON have produced under 2.5 goals. A solid defensive foundation has been a big factor in those low-scoring games, as they have conceded just once in their four matches in the competition.
The low-scoring encounters at AFCON may not be that surprising considering their last ten international games have now produced under 2.5 goals.
The recent history of this fixture is against Gambia, as they have lost the last two meetings of these two teams. Both defeats came in qualifying for the African Cup of Nations in 2015 and 2016.
Cameroon
The indomitable Lions 2-1 win over Comoros in the last-16 was overshadowed by the death of eight people in a stampede outside the stadium. On the field, Cameroon struggled to overcome the plucky debutants. Comoros started the game without a recognised goalkeeper, then were reduced to ten men early in the encounter.
However, they eventually overcome the minnows to book their spot in the quarter-final of the competition.
Cameroon made the last-16 of the AFCON by taking seven points from their three group games. They recorded wins over Burkina Faso, Ethiopia before a draw against Cape Verde in the final group game before their last-16 win over Comoros.
The hosts have been a difficult team to beat in recent years, as they have lost just one of their previous 13 international matches. They have also now won seven of their last eight international matches.
The Indomitable Lions have also lost just one of their last 14 matches at the African Cup of Nations. They are not only favourites to progress past Saturday’s opponents, but also one of the favourites to win the competition on home soil.
Conclusion
Cameroon were not that impressive against Comoros, while Gambia have looked solid and well organised throughout the competition. We believe this is going to be a close game. With that in mind, we are backing under 2.5 goals scored and Cameroon to win, but it is unlikely to be a comfortable game for the hosts.
Our Tips: We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 19/40 and Cameroon to win at odds of 1/2. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
