Media reports suggest that Frank Lampard will be unveiled as the new head coach of Everton Football Club. The appointment would bring an end to what has become a circus of a search for a replacement for Rafa Benitez.
Lampard has now met members of the club’s hierarchy on several occasions. Vitor Pereira and Duncan Ferguson were also contenders, but it seems that the Toffees have made their choice.
Set to assemble a strong backroom staff
Any head coach is only as good as the people around him. Lampard is reportedly set to assemble a strong backroom staff. Former England and Chelsea coach Steve Holland is expected to be Lampard’s assistant at the Merseyside club.
Meanwhile, Everton are looking at approaching Chelsea to bring in highly-rated coach Anthony Barry. The 34-year-old was born in Liverpool and started his playing career with the Toffees.
A return to his home city and a big role in Lampard’s backroom staff could well tempt him to leave the European champions. Reports suggest that Chelsea are reluctant to let Barry leave though. Lampard’s former assistant Jody Morris is unlikely to join his set-up at Everton.
The staff that join the prospective new boss at his new club could play a key role in making the former Derby head coach a success on Merseyside.
Calm heads needed at Everton
Unfortunately, Everton has turned into something of a rudderless ship in recent years. The club are without a director of football following the sacking of Marcel Brands and the rest of the club’s hierarchy seem to lack football knowledge.
The Toffees hierarchies’ biggest mistake was arguably the appointment of former Liverpool icon Rafa Benitez as head coach last summer. Reportedly, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri overruled the rest of the club’s board to appoint the Spaniard.
Benitez’s reign was a disaster resulting in Everton being sucked into the fight for Premier League survival. The Toffees are just four points clear of the relegation zone after one win in their last 14 league games.
By all accounts, Frank Lampard is a pretty level headed guy. He is known to be an intelligent guy, who should bring calmness to the team, which at the moment they lack. His appointment will not fix all Everton’s ills. However, it could well be a step in the right direction for the trophy-starved Merseyside club.
It could be a good fit for both parties
The appointment could be a good fit for both parties. Lampard has held talks with other clubs in the past. However, he has pulled out of talks or decided not to pursue his interest in jobs.
The Everton squad in their current state does not look like a great prospect. However, the club from Merseyside has great potential with the right people in charge. If Lampard gets it right, he has the chance to lead the once-great club back to success.
This could well be the opportunity that Frank Lampard has been waiting for to reignite his managerial career. He will certainly be a less divisive appointment than his predecessor and is likely to receive far better backing from the Goodison Park faithful than the Spaniard.
