When: Tuesday 8 February 2022, Kick-off 19:45
Where: St James Park
On Tuesday night, Newcastle and Everton go head-to-head at St James Park in what could be a massive game in the fight for survival in the Premier League.
Newcastle
After a difficult season, things may be looking up for Eddie Howe’s team. Although they are still 19th place in the Premier League table, they are just a point from safety and four points adrift of their 16th place visitors.
A 1-0 win at another out-of-form Leeds last time out lifted spirits and it means that the Magpies are unbeaten in three top-flight games in the English top-flight. The victory ended a five-game winless run in the Premier League for the home team. The clash also saw the north east team pick up their first clean sheet in six league matches.
Newcastle will need to improve their home record if they are to escape the drop, as they have won just one of their last 11 league outings at St James Park. However, they have also suffered just one defeat in their last six home games in the English top-flight, with four of the six games producing draws.
Newcastle were busy late in the transfer window. January signings Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett could all make their Magpies debut in this clash.
Everton
The mood has completely changed at Everton over the past week. Last Monday saw the arrival of Frank Lampard as head coach and Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek joining the club on a frantic deadline day on Merseyside.
Since then, the Toffees have recorded a resounding 4-1 home win over Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round. Everton produced a far more confident display against the Bees and will head into this game in confident mood.
The victory over Brentford ended a run of six games without a win any competition for the Toffees over 90 minutes. The result also means that Lampard recorded the biggest debut win of any post-war Everton boss.
The former Chelsea and derby head coach has a big job on his hands lifting his team in the Premier League though, as the men from Merseyside have won just one of their last 14 games in the English top-flight.
The new Everton head coach has some good selection headaches for this clash. Alli and Van de Beek are both available after missing the Brentford game due to being cup-tied. Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin could return after an injury. Lampard may well decide not to make too many changes to his starting line-up though after such an encouraging opening result.
Conclusion
There are so many unknowns to this game. Both teams are in poor form, but head into this game on the back of good results in their last outings. Both teams have new players, while the visitors have a new head coach in charge.
Newcastle have won three of the last three meetings between these two teams. However, they have also won just four of the last 15 games between the pair.
We are sitting on the fence with this game and backing the draw. The other bet we are backing is for Richarlison to be an anytime goalscorer. The Brazilian international scored a goal and looked highly dangerous last time out.
Our Tips: We are backing the draw at odds of 9/5 and/or Richarlison to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 5/2. (All odds are taken from Bet365)
