Earlier today Burnley announced the shocking news that they had parted company with head coach Sean Dyche and also the majority of his coaching staff. The decision came out of the blue despite the club’s current position in the Premier League relegation zone.
Dyche had been in charge at the Lancashire club for close to a decade and was the Premier League’s longest-serving head coach. He leaves the club in 18th place in the table and four points adrift of safety with just eight league games remaining.
Dyche has done a brilliant job at Burnley
Sean Dyche has done a brilliant job with Burnley. He has helped the club to two promotions from the Championship, while also leading the Clarets to European football for the first time in over a decade.
Their current position in the Premier League table is not great. However, there is an argument that Dyche has been fighting with one hand tied behind his back when it comes to backing from the club’s hierarchy. When it comes to signings, the club have been shopping in the bargain basement compared to most of the other clubs in the English top flight.
Never mind a transfer budget, Burnley has more of a piggy bank than a real transfer budget when it comes to bringing in players. The squad is full of players that probably wouldn’t get in the majority of most other top-flight teams.
If Dyche would have had any sort of financial backing, they probably would not be in their current predicament. It would be harsh to blame the head coach for the team’s current position. Much of the blame lies in the corridors of power at Turf Moor.
What now for Burnley and Dyche?
It will be difficult for Burnley to find a head coach capable of keeping them in the Premier League at this late stage of the Premier League campaign. It would be a miracle if any other head coach could come into the club and ring more out of the current squad.
Dyche did everything he could with the resources he had. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, as the saying goes. He did the best his best and that has been good enough to keep Burnley punching above their weight for a long time.
It will be interesting to see who the Claret’s appoint as the next head coach. It is not as if there is a huge number of head coaches with magical relegation avoidance abilities. Good luck to the Clarets, though, because they are going to need it.
The strange thing is that Sean Dyche will probably watch straight back into a Premier League job when one becomes available in the summer or next season. He is highly regarded and respected within the game.
While it seems unlikely that Burnley will be plying their trade in the Premier League next season, their former boss could yet have the last laugh and end up back in the English top-flight next season.
