Prediction and odds for the game: Manchester United (11/5) vs Chelsea (5/4)
We are backing the away win
When: Thursday 28 April 2022, Kick-off 19:45
Where: Old Trafford
On Thursday night, two of the Premier League’s most successful teams clash at Old Trafford, as Manchester United hosts Chelsea.
Manchester United
The Red Devils’ chances of playing Champions League football next season now look to be over after a woeful recent run of form. United head into this game on the book of just one win in their last five Premier League matches.
A 3-1 defeat at Arsenal last time out means that Ralf Rangnick’s team has now lost three of their last four matches in the Premier League. The defeat in north London leaves United six points adrift of the fourth-place Gunners, who also have a game in hand.
One positive for Manchester United of late has been that they have been hard to beat at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils are unbeaten in seven matches on home soil in the Premier League. They have also scored at least two goals in three of their last five league outings at Old Trafford.
Chelsea
The Blues’ recent Premier League form has not been that convincing of late. They have yet to mathematically confirm a place in the Champions League for next season. However, Thomas Tuchel’s team is seven points ahead of fifth-place Tottenham, with a game in hand. It seems almost a formality, but the Blues cannot afford any complacency heading into the final strait of the English top-flight season.
A 1-0 victory over West Ham last time out also means that Chelsea has won seven of their last nine league matches. The win came on the back of a 4-2 home defeat against capital rivals Arsenal.
The Blues are unbeaten in their last five away matches in the Premier League, having recorded four straight wins. Their recent away form has been contrasting to their form at Stamford Bridge in the English top-flight.
One of the key reasons for Chelsea’s recent good away form has been excellent attacking displays, as Thomas Tuchel’s team has scored at least three goals in each of their last three league matches on their travels.
Chelsea defensive pair Reece James and Antonio Rudiger have returned to training having recovered from minor knocks.
Conclusion
Manchester United look to be sleepwalking to the summer when new head coach Erik ten Hag arrives. Chelsea’s recent form has been mixed by their recent high standards, but the Blues’ strong away record leads us to fancy the away win. We think this could be a high-scoring encounter too, so we are taking a punt on over 3.5 goals scored.
Our Tips: We are backing the home win at odds of 5/4 and/or over 3.5 goals scored at odds of 2/1. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
