Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United at the end of his contract later this month to join former club Juventus as a free agent for the second time. The 29-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Bianconeri. Some reports suggest PSG have an interest in signing Pogba. However, it seems that the midfielder would prefer a return to his former club this summer.

Pogba is leaving United for Juventus for a second time

The midfielder started his professional football career at Manchester United. However, the Red Devils lost the then youngster to Juventus on a free transfer in 2012. Pogba then established himself as one of the best midfielders over the next four years.

Pogba looked like the complete box-to-box midfielder in his four years in Turin, winning the Scudetto four times during his time in Serie A. He was one of the Bianconeri’s standout players, as they dominated the Italian top-flight.

Move to Manchester United hasn’t worked out

Pogba’s displays for Juventus persuaded Manchester United to shell out a then-world-record fee of around £89million in 2016. United expected to receive the Pogba, who had been so impressive in Serie A, especially in his final two seasons in Turin.

Despite a positive start to his Manchester United career, Pogba’s time in the English north-west has been a tale of inconsistency. In recent seasons, his undoubted talent has not always been on full display for the Red Devils. Although there have been some notable positive performances from the France international, he has not quite looked the same player as he was at Juve or for Les Bleus.

In fact, Pogba’s late agent, Mino Raiola, states in a 2021 documentary about the midfielder that he is not the same player at United as he is for France or was for Juventus. There was also a hint that something wasn’t quite right behind the scenes when it came to dealing with the Red Devil’s hierarchy, who were understandably reluctant to commit to giving Pogba a new deal considering his unconvincing displays.

It would not be unfair to say that Paul Pogba’s career has stagnated at Manchester United. Last season, the midfielder made just 20 Premier League appearances, including 16 starts for the Red Devils. In those games, he managed to score once and produce nine assists. His lack of top-flight appearances was mainly due to injury.

However, some criticised the midfielder for his lifestyle and perceived lack of motivation to play for the team when he was available to play. All the blame for Pogba’s underwhelming United career cannot be laid at the player’s door, as other factors have affected his time at Old Trafford.

A move to Juventus may reignite his football fire

Paul Pogba comes across as a player who performs best when he is loved and wanted. If he does not get that admiration, then maybe he doesn’t perform at his best. His first spell at Juventus was a success, and the fans took to the France international. Perhaps that sort of affection can reignite his career the second time around in Turin.

At 29 years of age, Pogba still has plenty of playing career ahead of him. He is far from finished. A move to Juventus seems to be a positive one for the midfielder, and it could just be what he needs on the back of a seriously underwhelming six years in Manchester.
