Numerous media outlets are reporting that Arsenal are in talks with Manchester City about signing their versatile Brazilian forward, Gabriel Jesus, with a fee of around £50 million mooted. It is a deal that could work out well for everybody involved, as all parties involved could benefit from the move.

Not always first choice for Manchester City

Although Gabriel Jesus has scored 95 goals in 236 across all competitions, the 25-year-old has not always been a first-team regular. Since his arrival in 2017, he has never made more than 22 Premier League starts for City. He has made some vital contributions to Manchester City’s cause. However, there is a sense that he could produce more given the game time.

The fact that City head coach Pep Guardiola often used Jesus from a wide forward position rather than his more natural central attacking role arguably limited his goal output.

City signing superstar striker Erling Haaland this summer will only push Jesus further down the pecking order. City signing Haaland and selling the Brazilian for just under the Norwegian’s transfer fee makes big sense financial too.

Would be one of the first names on the team sheet at Arsenal

A move to Arsenal could well be a decisive one for Jesus and his career. At 25 years of age, Jesus must be playing regularly and considered a key player for his club team.

Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta coached him during his time at Manchester City as Guardiola’s assistant. The Spaniard knows the qualities that Jesus brings to a team.

No doubt Jesus has some work to do on his finishing. His sharpness in front of goal may well improve by playing every game. However, Jesus doesn’t just bring goalscoring ability to his team and his work rate and willingness to press opposition teams. Arteta wants his team to press high up the pitch, and Jesus could be the perfect player for that.

The Gunners are desperately short of strikers, too, with only youngster Eddie Nketiah the lone central striker at the club. French forward Alexandre Lacazette has decided to return to former club Lyon with his Gunners contract expiring at the end of the month.

Jesus could enjoy the prime of his career at Arsenal

Gabriel Jesus’ career at Manchester City has been far from a failure. The Brazil international has won four Premier League titles with the Citizens. However, there has always been a sense of that there is untapped potential with the forward. At 25, he is in the prime of his career and could still enjoy the best individual years of his playing career in north London.

Playing for Arsenal is not likely to reward him with as much silverware. He could shine far brighter as an individual while helping his team with the Gunners.

The move is one of those rare ones that could make sense for the selling club, the buying club and, more importantly, the player. Only time will tell if Gabriel Jesus is successful at Arsenal if of course he makes a move to north London.
