Liverpool and Leicester City will collide later this week in one of the final Premier League fixtures of 2022.
Liverpool
The surge of the scousers, at least in the red half, has been a notable storyline in the Premier League over the course of the last few years. This time around, though, it doesn’t quite seem like that’s the case. Jurgen Klopp regularly takes up the position of public enemy number one in the eyes of rival fans and, as always, the club itself continues to position itself as an outsider – and one that isn’t doing that well.
Liverpool made their way back to action against Manchester City in the League Cup and, with a weakened side, they fell to a 3-2 defeat against the English champions. They then took on an Aston Villa team that was desperate to put up a real fight in the second city, with Klopp’s men managing to edge out a 3-1 win that should give them renewed confidence in the push for the top four.
Leicester
Leicester City supporters will be keeping a close eye on how things develop in the weeks ahead with many wondering whether or not Brendan Rodgers has what it takes to stay on as the Foxes’ manager. As a club, they’ve experienced their greatest highs in the last six years. Alas, they want to try and build on that, as opposed to remaining stagnant despite having a squad stacked full of talent.
After being narrowly beaten by Manchester City at the end of October, Leicester went on a great run both before and after the World Cup break. They rattled off four straight wins, two in the league and two in the cup, perhaps indicating that they were turning a corner. Unfortunately, they had to face the reality of that not being true when they were humbled in a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle on Boxing Day.
Conclusion
Even though Leicester have the ability necessary to take the hosts to the limit, we just don’t think that reality will play out for the world to see. We expect Liverpool to take an early lead and, after inviting pressure that’ll probably never arrive from the visitors, they’ll start to slowly ramp up the intensity heading into the second half.
Given the tradition of Liverpool fans imitating the atmosphere of a library at Anfield for domestic matches, we think this one will bleed out with the home side coming away with a 3-0 win. From there, Rodgers may have to consider packing his bags, depending on how other results leave them in the grand scheme of the table.
