Mendy has failed to reach the high standards he first set when he was signed by Frank Lampard in 2020 from French club Rennes for $27.5m and under Thomas Tuchel’s stewardship, the Senegalese won the Champions League in his debut season with the Blues, becoming the first African goalkeeper to play in a Champions League final since 1985.
During that campaign, Mendy equaled the record of most clean sheets in a Champions League season with nine. Mendy’s fitness and form have seen him slip behind Arrizabalaga this season however in a torrid campaign for the Blues which currently sees them languishing 11th in the league.
