One of this season’s breakthrough stars Folarin Balogun has decided to represent USMNT and switch allegiances from England with immediate effect.
The 21-year-old Brooklyn-born forward has had a standout season in France on loan at Reims from the Gunners, scoring his 20th goal of the season in his side’s 2-1 defeat at Lens on Friday.

Balogun has been a regular in England’s under-21 team, scoring seven goals in 13 matches for Lee Carsley’s side. However, as reported by CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs, the youngster applied for, and received, a one-time switch waiver from FIFA allowing him to represent the United States at an international level immediately.
Balogun recently expressed his frustration about missing out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad in March, posting a message on his personal Instagram page saying: “In life, go where your appreciated”.
In a recent interview with the Official Ligue 1 website Balogun said, “London is my city, it’s where I grew up, where my friends are, and if people ask me where I’m from, I say I’m English. But, yes, I am a mixture of all these cultures.”
