Former Chelsea star Eden Hazard has left Real Madrid after it was announced his contract has been terminated by mutual consent.
In an official statement on Saturday, Los Blancos announced, “Real Madrid C.F. and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement by which the player is disassociated from the club as of June 30, 2023″.
The 32-year-old was lifted by his Real Madrid teammates on the pitch after their 1-1 draw at home with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, in which the Belgian was only an unused substitute.
Ex-Premier League star leaves Real Madrid after disappointing spell
The former Belgium captain has disappointed fans and pundits alike following his 2019 $107m move from Chelsea on a five-year contract. At the Blues, Hazard established himself as one of the best players in England, winning the Premier League Player of the Season Award in 2015 and the club’s Player of the Season Award on four separate occasions.
Hazard will now decide on whether to attempt to kickstart his career elsewhere or retire from all forms of professional football this summer. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid will save almost $7.5 after terminating Hazard’s contract one year early with the Belgian giving up part of the salary he was due to earn.
