Newcastle United are on the verge of making their first signing of the summer transfer window, as a $70 million fee is close to being agreed with AC Milan for Sandro Tonali.
The Magpies have been looking to strengthen their options in the middle of midfield over the opening week of the summer window, and have turned to one of Milan’s star performers from the 2022-23 campaign.
Sandro Tonali closing in on Newcastle move
The Magpies made headlines late last week after making an ambitious approach for Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella. However, they were knocked back in their approach with the Champions League finalists demanding an extra $30 million.
Newcastle have quickly moved onto other options, and a deal for Tonali is close to being finalized, according to the Athletic.
The Italian international was one of the standout players for Milan in their Champions League campaign last season, as he played in all 12 European matches. He also made 34 appearances in Serie A, scoring twice and registering seven assists.
